My friend Ben send me to his company’s blog with an article about people leaving games to work in the space industry. As much as I love working with people in the game industry, I don’t think I can fault someone for wanting to work on satellites.

It kind of go me to thinking as to whether there are any industries I’d rather be in. For me, space and Hollywood are pretty far up there but the film industry is pretty close to games (I might give games an edge). Are there industries (or jobs) that you'd much rather have but would be a total career switch for you?

I've always figured I'll take up novel-writing when I retire. It's a passion of mine I've put on hold for all this technowhatsits.

Maybe that wasn't a good idea; it's not like I'm making money these days.

Making games for us is a secondary thing to our actual jobs, i have always wondered what things would have been like had i gone down the game design route as a career at uni and such.

exoticising the working class is seriously fucking offensive and a symptom of a distressingly high level of social segregation

i already did, it's just that sometimes games reach back out from the void and say "super joe, human of diamonds, you are the smartest, strongest, most talented man on earth and we don't even mind that your weanus has an obscene twist and curvature to it leading to a grossly deviated urinary stream and a faint smell of prawns, because your soul is beautiful like a horse" and with compliments like that who can say no to lending a helping hand

I sometimes think about this,
so far, jobs I could one day want to do more than game dev include;
-Policeman
-Missionary
-Rally driver
-Film Critic
-Actor

I would't quit game making for it, but if I had to chose another career than that I would chose teaching.

As a senior in college I'm in the process of deciding on whether or not to truly commit to this industry as a CS major. The problem is though that throughout my job searching process, I've never seen a company and thought "I'd love to do that" which hasn't been in gamedev. Even at a high level of which industry, none of the other options for CS have ever given me any excitement really.

That being said, I've heard its pretty easy to become a zookeeper at the Safari Park (San Diego) so that's probably my fallback  Durr...?

a job isn't something you do because you love it, that's in badly written movies

I'd rather do something that I enjoy rather than wasting my day doing something I hate. You're right that I'm not getting a job because I just love to give my time to other people, but it would still be nice to make the experience as painless as I can.

That's kind of a dumb reason to resign yourself to a job that you don't find interesting. There are plenty of people out there who enjoy their work.
