Intergalactic Road Warriors

So after another month of development we decided to release onto early access. Bottom line is, if we don't see any money coming in soon we'd have to call it quits for now. The game is currently in alpha, and lot's of stuff is still to change. Our goal is to get a small community going on the steam discussion forums. Wish us luck!

early access:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/435210

Website is up and running:
http://intergalacticroadwarriors.com/

Summary:
IRW is a side scrolling racing game set in outer space. This violent grand prix takes place on a wide range of planets. You’ll be racing in all corners of the known universe.

You have been invited to join this intergalactic racing tournament. The whole thing is basically a battle royale with a finish line. There are no rules at all, except for one: reaching the finish line.

I’m developing this game together with @m0rph3v5 and @pongball under Turtleblaze. http://turtleblaze.com/

Team:
3 man team:
  • Rilem - art
  • M0rph3v5 - code
  • Pongball - audio

Planned features:

  • big singleplayer story mode
  • advanced car customisation
  • online multiplayer
  • intense side scrolling racing
  • firearm battles while driving
  • branching path level design like the old sonic games
  • loads of characters & cars
  • lots of different planets to race on

Status:

We spent 3 days building a first version of the game. You can read all about what we did in those first 3 days here: http://blog.turtleblaze.com/post/131946944869/dev-log-1.

Some moving screenshots of the current build in action:

crashing

vehicle combat

loops etc

Loving how this looks so far. The blur effect on the cars gives a nice feeling of speed, and seeing how they impact the ground gives a nice feeling of weight. It's also a great game idea; I'm imagining Mario Kart on steroids...and in space!

Exactly! The wackyness of mario kart + space = infinite possibilities! :D

Great sense of motion in those gifs, the motion blur in the wheels, the explosions look great. Pleased to see 'branching path level design like the old sonic games' in the list, I really miss that. Sonic 3 did it so well, and then the GBA games messed that up. I think that's one of those things that is harder than it seems from a level design point of view.

Yes!
We should just call it Redline: the game. That movie was amazing, and a big inspiration! :D
We're really trying to get the sense of speed that movie had in this game, which isn't trivial since we're doing a sidescroller. But with some motion blur, screen shakes and camera tricks we're getting there. Smiley

I'm fiddling with shaders to 'generate' planets. The track select screen will have a space background with the planet of the currently selected track in focus. I could make art for all of those planets, but I love the challenge of generating 3d planets which look just as good, or maybe even better.  Wizard

First caught a glimpse of this on twitter and nice to find a devlog for it here. The motion of the cars is great with the blurring speed and the planet shaders generator is looking interesting.
