Download Resist!(Windows)

Resist! is my attempt at making a game about suicide bombings that is more than the lame 2D Flash game that exists now.  More about it can be read here on my blog.

Hey there!

Alright, let's see...

The first things that pops in my mind when playign this game is the general lack of feedback. It's hard to tell what's going on in the screen since there are few elements that shows the changing states of the player. May it be walking or placing a bomb, more feedback would be nice to make the game more enjoyable. For instance, holding down the space button to place a bomb doesn't indicate anythign at all to the player in order to know how long the bomb will take befor eexploding, even though it influences it.

Another thing that strikes me is that it takes a very long time before finding a good place to detonate a bomb. I suggest making the level a lot smaller so that the player can start using the core mechanics faster.

It feels as if the game lacks depth. May it be strategy or motivational elements, I feel like the game is more like a sketch of an idea. I don't feel like exploding people nor understand why I should do it. I cna't seme to see the true intent behind the game.

So, it is simple but I feel like it could be much more. I hope this helps a bit.
Take care!

Thanks for the feedback.  While I understand the things you said, such as the lack of feedback, and the difficulty of finding a place to drop a bomb, all these things are there for a reason.  The game is meant to show why groups resort to suicide bombings, and I can assure you the ease at which you can blow yourself up, the lack of direction, etc. all have significance in proving the game's point.

Once I get to a certain height, the game freezes.  What I was able to play of it was pretty neat.  I liked the touch of only being able to read the instructions for a limited amount of time.

Unfortunatly the game's point is not obvious to the player. It feels like its simply not working. I'm not saying the concept is bad, I'm simply saying it doesn't work as you intended. In fact, these issues cover whatever message you want to communicate with the game. I am not trying to figure out what it means because I am not enjoying myself interacting with the core. Suicide bombing is not about some one who has to walk 5 miles in the desert and then stand still for 2 seconds until turrets turn him red and everything blows up so he can come back to life without a scratch. I know this is not the message intented but right now, the lack of feedback and depth to the game makes the player remain on the surface of the game which doens't lead it to analyze and understand your point of view correctly.

I'm pretty sure you can come up with a way to make this fun and meaningful to the player using the mechanics you got. Smiley In fact, I'd love to see a second version of this.

My two cents Smiley

Yes, finally a controversial suicide bombing game for us video game connoisseurs. Ah, reading your description about the deeper facts of suicide bombing was indeed poetry to my ears.

The game itself, an excellent symbolic trip to the mind of an oppressed man. The long walk to the city could be considered as the life of the man leading to the climactic end where he strikes down his oppressors. Brilliant! My first experience with this game was a bitter defeat. I set down the bomb and was immediately evaporated by the watchful gun turret. I was angry, my whole life was lost in vain. In my confusion I noticed that I had been given another chance at life. I was confused as I didn't believe in reincarnation, being a complete atheist. However I now knew there was a higher power that wanted me to succeed in my mission. I prepared myself for the rough path of life once more.

I arrived at the city. I looked at the faces of my fellow men and the ominous turret that gazed right through me with its bright red eyes. I set my bomb, I blew up. Everything went black, but then suddenly I could see light. It was Allah, the great God! He welcomed me to heaven with open arms.

Indeed, I have figured out the deep message behind this game.

If anything, this game is meant to disassociate religion with suicide bombing...Allah, or any type of god, has nothing to do with it.
