Now I need to remove the grayish background -> write some image processing algorithm to do that, and unfortunately I'm not quite sure how to do that.

Thanks a lot!

It's actually really hard to get a good, evenly lit, matte background surface.
Add some annoying webcam autoexposure features, and it's hell of a job.

I found that a turned off LCD monitor serves as an extremely good background.

Original:

First attempt at transparency:

A few spots on the left side (they will be cropped away). More worrisome is the far-back legs of the pig getting marked as transparent. (and the source image is near-perfect IMO)

You need a background that's more different from the pink of the pig. Dark pink look black-ish. Use a greenscreen or something.

My issue with robots as game characters is that they're usually just metal humanoids. I'd like to see a game with really bizarre shaped robots that are clearly designed for some function that doesn't require arms, legs or a head in the traditional sense and look more like self-propelled mining equipment.

That'd be a good idea for next TIGSource compo.

Thirded!

I revamped my dialog boxes for a Zelda ripoff homage. They scroll smoothly and have responses and everything! I am proud of such small accomplishments.

Obviously this is just filler text... OR IS IT?

Specific NPC's can get specific color schemes that identify them, and fourth-wall-breaking tutorial messages get their own too (in order to help suspension of disbelief) but I can't decide on a general default color scheme.

Black on White
Black on Gray
White on Desaturated Blue
White on Saturated Blue

I guess it will depend on what complements overall color scheme of the rest of the game's graphics...

Nope. I think they're pretty boring characters.

Like anything else, they're great if done well. Smiley
I'm curious about the one on the right!

To test the scrolling and page breaks, I did the entire opening in this style. "I was born and raised in a small village in the west of Philadelphia. As a boy, most of my days were spent playing on the grounds, relaxing in the cool air, and enjoying the occasional ball game with my schoolmates. I can still remember when that gang of ruffians, up to no good I assure you, moved into my neighborhood and began making mischief..."

I think the third option looks the best by far! Black on grey is probably the most difficult to read of those four.

Awesome dangerousday.  If that screenshot was bigger I'd be tempted to set it as my desktop wallpaper Smiley.  Also I agree with MurrayL, white on desaturated blue looks best to my eyes.

Ahahaha wonderful!
I'm going to have to third the white on de-saturated blue. It definitely looks the best.
