It's not a terrible advertisement. I can see what they were thinking - try to show girls that being a scientist is not contrary to being beautiful and glamorous. I'm not sure if that's a major reason why women would avoid careers in science, but I'm sure it has even a little impact. I suspect that more good than bad will come of this advertisement as far as the target audience of young girls is concerned.

They probably would have done a much better job if they'd made a series of advertisements consisting of interviews with attractive female scientists, talking about what they do, what they studied, and maybe talking a little bit about things like families or personal interests, to show that a career in the sciences doesn't mean they had to throw away their other interests. That probably would be far more effective with less potential for offense.

I'd be pretty interested in reading about what motivated European Commission to arrange the advertisement in this fashion. Hopefully they put some significant thought into what they were trying to portray instead of just throwing some Euros at a studio and broadcasting whatever came back...

As someone who's worked alongside a good number of female scientists, and is the son of a female scientist, that ad makes me feel really sad.

Not only does it bastardize science Oohhhh Steamy Beakers but it also just throws a bunch of "this is feminine" stereotypes in where it doesn't belong.

Well, whatever. It's an advertisement. When was the last time an advertisement did anything good ever?

What did it have to do with science? Am I missing something?

There was a guy using a microscope. And that's pretty much it.

i get the female stereotype thing but are you guys really complaining that a tv ad aimed at the general public doesn't "correctly" represent science but instead uses a bunch of symbols the average person associates with science?

In addition of stereotypes what annoys me is the missed potential. There is so much stuff in science which could/should be used for purposes like this ad. I don't think it is very effective in portraying beauty of science and therefore a bad ad.

The shot opens in a bacterial culture lab. About a half dozen scientists in white coats sit at stools at their various desks. They all appear to be busy, taking and replacing reagents from the various freezers around the rooms, pipetting, running gels, and centrifuging. A blonde woman turns to the man working at the desk next to her. "Hey, are you doing any maxipreps today?" She asks. "No, I still have to transform my T2A_EGFRt insert" he says.

Fade to black, white text appears in the screen that says "Science is for everyone"

You really can't win when making these ads, you know. If you go the honest route and interview a bunch of female scientists or whatever then it probably ends up boring and too long for an ad, if you go the "glamorous" route and just pile a bunch of clips together, quickly cut from one to another without focusing on any particular shot for more than a few frames, add in generic music and a slogan that wouldn't have been memorable 10 years ago, and hope it all works out then you get this.

The best TV advertisement for the power of science is Breaking Bad. (Although they don't have any women cooking meth...yet. EDIT: And holy dicks, I just checked and season 5 starts in 2 weeks!)

If female scientists want to be sexy then I don't know what all the fuss is about.
