I think we've gone too far with the whole elves/dwarves thing. There's more to fantasy than all those fantasy races, and they don't really add that much to the feel. And tbh, I find them hard to absorb… those elves with infinite lifespans or the dwarves who are made of muscle. Also while looking for history of elves, I found this: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/extra-punctuation/9460-Elves-and-Dwarves-Dont-Define-FantasyOh, and magic is a little lame too. But everyone just rolls with it, because it's too much work trying to introduce new races.

It depends on how you do it though. Myself I'm fed with dwarves and elfs but magic can be quite interesting if it is done properly like Robin Hobb in her books. But if you want some new races, I suggest you to read Walter Moers' books. They barely have humans and dozens of weird creatures.

I was reading Vernor Vinge's A Fire Upon the Deep recently. They had a really interesting race in it that was kinda like dogs, except a pack of dogs made an individual. When members of an individual died, part of their pack would be replaced and the individual would change. There was even a fascist dictator in the book that deliberately killed off parts of his followers so he could sculpt them into "better" individuals.

Magic can work well. I'm just bored with the whole "10 mana points = 1 fireball" kind of thing. And "water magic beats fire". And it creates this huge plot hole where the team can do full resurrections and teleportations, but the boss can kidnap certain members or override resurrections if it means drama.
I planned magic to work like black magic IRL - you don't know if it works, and it leaves the player guessing whether their elite voodoo shaman really has any power. Like you can pop a few pills in someone's drink to get someone possessed by an evil spirit, but you don't know whether it's just an insanity pill or a true evil spirit pill.
Heh, might be worth starting a thread for fun gameplay magic.

How do I add a profile pic' and where am I supposed to ask this question? I've tried uploading my own 40x40 .png file. Said it was too large. Tried other sizes and .jpg too. Nothing. Uploaded to another site and linked to it. Nothing. What gives?

if anyone with a mac (os x) and a few minutes of spare time could test my game to see if it runs. have no reason to believe it won't, just need to be double sure just in case.

It's my birthday! I got a bunch of board games for my birthday, which I am SO happy about. My board game shelf (once sparse) is now overflowing with amazing games. Here's the list of my new board games: Wrath of Ashardalon 7 Wonders Ghost Stories Mag Blast Netrunner Bang! We had over 12 hours of awesome festivities (for the most part; people had to come and go, obviously), and the board-gamin' never stopped. It was just a wonderful experience, and the best birthday I've had yet.

Your birthday sounds incredible. I'm super jealous. I just started figuring out how to play Netrunner with one of my brothers in my fraternity and I'm very excited.

Also happy birthday <3 <3
