Living up to the already high standards they've set for themselves.

It's interesting how the business of horror games seems different from horror movies. If Dead Space was a horror movie series, each consecutive chapter would have been given a cheaper budget to make up for diminishing ticket sales. But with horror games (as with AAA games in general) each new sequel has to be bigger than the previous one, demanding higher budgets. Why couldn't they just have kept Dead Space as pure horror gaming and decreased the budgets for the sequels? This all or nothing mentality with AAA IPs is really stupid.

Seeing as most horror series turned into campy schlock for gore hounds rather than genuinely frightening material, Dead Space 3 is going right along with this. D:

Heh. Quality aside, at least the diminished budgets mean we get 8 Nightmare on Elm Street movies, 12 Friday the 13th, 7 Saw, 5 Final Destination and so on. But Dead Space gets the axe after just 3 games because they stupidly try to turn it into some big blockbuster tentpole that needs to appeal to non-horror fans. So Dead Space 3 didn't meet expectations. Why not just make a smaller, back-to-basics sequel instead of abandoning the whole thing? It seems really weird from a business perspective.

That approach makes infinitely more sense for games too since you can reuse a lot of assets, or at the very least the codebase, reducing a big chunk out of production costs. I guess it's just the Call of Duty effect were the big producers are desperate to make juggernauts out of everything, dropping Dead Space completely though smacks of a butthurt babby backlash.

at any rate, i dont think dead space was ever a "pure" horror game. i can only speak for the 1st here, but that was already a lot closer to resident evil 4 than anything truly "survival horror".

Well, I suppose having a gun made it less pure survival horror, but there was definitely a bigger focus on mood and tension in the first one.

I don't know if I want this game anymore. They have also sacrificed city size because of the multiplayer. It seems like you will quickly hit a limit where your city is basically done and you just have to move on and start a new one. Making a couple of single purpose cities isn't the same as having a megapolis where you have to balance everything.

EA releases another trash game bogged down with mind blowingly retarded DRM? Surprises around every corner.
I hope the crack doesn't take too long.

It's nothing new as EA always make the worst choice possible regarding of their games. You hate DRM? We make the game you used to love with DRM. I'd like to see the day where EA decide to shutdown Sim City server because they "though" no one playing it anymore. oh well at least square enix
That...was...somehow hilarious.

It's not a trash game. The simulation is top notch and better than the previous titles. The multiplayer however feels ham-fisted. There some interesting ideas to it but even more working against the overall experience.

I haven't seen a whole lot on this forum about Papo & Yo, and I haven't played it either. I can't say how successful it is, but I think it's approach and purpose are admirable. I listened to an interview with it's creator Vander Caballero on a Destructoid livestream, video found or here for work-friendly podcast. He says some pretty powerful stuff about the reasons to make games and the games he personally wants to create and see more of. (He's indie enough for me anyway) There's not much talk about the show itself, Sup Holmes? which is a little odd since has been focusing on and out-and-out promoting indie and experimental games and devs. Though I'm not that surprised, as soon as the focus turns from the game to the developer this forum gets cruel and ruthless. Anyway it's for sure worth a watch/listen.

it depresses me that dead space 1 could be confused with pure horror when SH2 and RE1 were only in the last decade. pure horror never really got the chance to move forward, the franchises just became action games (I am not saying we need bad controls)...
