I'm on crack? you can play free to play for free, even if it gets even slower until it is useless, it is still free, and guess what? 80% of player never ever pay for them and still enjoy them. You could not do that with arcade or any previous business model past piracy, freeware or shareware. Guess what most commercial game are made to maximize profit in the way investor think they can. That some designer working under the investor threat don't think they are doing don't change more in any other field than with social. Especially since the model has been invented by genuine people who didn't thought deeply about that and made only a small amount of money until zynga happen! farmville was ripped from an honest game innovation made by other people trying to make social game enjoyable.
However evil or not they do have design merits irrelevant of making money, just pick the good bit and toss the bad, it's silly to not have a critical eye and just dismiss the whole things.

the good bits were all done better by older games tho Well I would say the good bits i'm refering to never get the chance to shine since the tabula rasa did remove the old good bits. And the cultural barrier and lack of design criticism have literally doomed them. what? mega indie?
Super mega indie. On a Jon Blow level, your indieness. More blow that jon because I have no release game ... and social game are pretty much not the definition of ideal indie people hold to their heart ... it's more the analytical designer in me shouting in the wind. |
