are we really willing to defend a zombie tower defense F2P over someone's dark psychedelic themed 3rd person adventure with themes of loss, love, and the power of the human spirit because the former has the ability to code and hire an artist from south korea? the problem is more that "idea guys" usually have ideas like "a kinect minecraft zombie mmo with a world map twice the size of the planet earth". they also tend to be (in my experience): 1. kids without even the faintest idea (heh) of how to actually develop or design a game 2. self absorbed fucks who have a meltdown when they realize ppl aren't particularly interested in developing their impossible game for them

The really good ideas come after you've made games in the genre you like and have some experience with game design and what works, what doesn't, etc.
I would put the chances of an idea guy having a genuinely amazing idea to be somewhere between none and fuck all.

Why not just hire writers? They're like "idea guys" except better.

Even non-game developers don't like idea guys. http://advancedriskology.com/idea-guy/Also has been said a billion times, but if you're good enough to make your own game, you already have a ton of your own ideas you want to do, so doing someone else's doesn't make a lot of sense, unless they've driven up to your place with a dumptruck full of money.

if programming is so easy, why don't you just learn how to program instead of bitching about how nobody appreciates your hidden genius

As a "kind" of idea guy, let me tell you:
Idea are easy, execution is hard.
If you wonder why there is so many clones and derivatives works, that's why. Idea and the execution of idea are tied up, an idea is a problem, problem need to be solve, solving is hard and putting it in a form is costly. And by solving I mean the idea isn't sufficient in itself, you need to find it's structure, to understand the resource cost and planning necessary to achieve it.
Most idea are formless and overscoped, but more importantly unproven. The unproven part is important, because: 1. People expect the same standard for new idea than old idea, idea guy tend to marry their idea and don't consider anything BUT that standard, they end up doing nothing because too low. 2. Finding resource resource is expensive, especially because of 1.
Solution? DIY and start small and focused. Build it overtime. For game the most important things is learn2program (c)
