Uppsala university says 2.8.
Where is everyone getting all these different numbers from (not you guys, but the people officially reporting this stuff)? <_>
Also, Gimmy, article explains that tectonic tensions can affect the entire plate and not just the edges.

That precise, daunting moment when you realize how much f*cking work your project has lined up for you.
Welp, time to goof off! :/

I'm thinking about a new personal project and wrote this yesterday. Without any further info - what do you think when you read this text? Just tell me your first impression and associations. GRIMOIRE is imbued with magical powers to weave a spell from magic symbols. A spell with the power to direct a computational process that summons magical entities into existence by conjuring and manipulating whisps of information. Bodyless, of no matter at all but undeniably a part of our shared reality. In their dance data-patterns are formed. All this by the power of the spirits inhabiting a computational device of your choice and exhibiting sufficient compatibility with GRIMOIRE. And by the same means they can be made to manifest in corporeal form as a visual pattern on your retina. GRIMOIRE makes it possible to bind the spirits through formulae carefully composed from symbolic expressions in an arcane language. An artefact like this is no toy. You must learn to communicate on it's terms if you want to make use from GRIMOIRE's powers. You will need concentration and experience to correctly anticipate the interplay of all the intricate permutations of symbols which make up each formula as even small errors can have complex and unanticipated consequences. But fear not. GRIMOIRE binds the spirits of computation securely and ensures they do your bidding precisely and accurately. To the novice GRIMOIRE provides a secure gateway to acquire fundamental knowledge in arcane computation whereas to the master, who, equipped with sufficient wisdom and tenacity, seeks immortality through the creation of unique constructs of art and self-expression, it will prove an invaluable artefact.

Reminds me of that one time Notch wanted to make a space sim with a fully working computer on board on which you could program.
It would also make for a reasonable explanation of the existence of robots and computers in a medieval fantasy setting.

I read about learned helplessness and IQ vs EQ today. Connection with popular topics? Yes, I don't perceive people who spread hatred around as having high EQ, but I'm sure they're very successful. The last couple of Angry Jack episodes outlined learned helplessness to a T. I originally thought it was another satire about how society lacked introspection.

I wrote some short skeleton of a game for that notch project back then. And I also played TIS-100 recently. Both are programming games but they embedd the programming in a fictional world. I thought that to be pretty cool and so I'm considering to do something similar. But it's probably a lot of extra work and could alienate as many people (non-gamers) as it attracts- especially when not succesfully implemented.

@lithander: That sounds a lot like an I was mulling too. I like the idea of a game where you create spells which are essentially algorithms. I wasn't sure how to make that user-friendly while still being complex enough to be interesting though. Maybe letting it alienate some (many?) people for the sake of an interesting game is worth it though -- it could be a really well-received niche game in certain crowds.
