ooh i didnt know that painted helmets were also worn in battle.

welp knights ended up losing out to foot soldiers (mercenaries) anyway over the course of the middle ages. they just weren't very mobile. also i guess nobles didn't feel like getting killed in wars anymore. in the early middle ages pretty much everyone fought, including high ranking clerics and stuff.

My understanding is that those pointy helmets (bascinet helmets / pig guards) were used when advancing into arrows. The pointy nose helped deflect arrows away from the face. Which is useful when walking up to fortified positions or generally advancing over open areas towards the enemy. Once you managed to get close, you'd probably want to remove the visor or flip it open (a bit of speculation)

edit: except that the helmet in the previous picture looks more like an armet. But I would guess it functioned similarly.

Crazy armet:

nope not most

there were definitely wars fought for "honor" or prestige tho. for medieval nobles representation was extremely important. mass media obv didn't exist, so you had to basically show off all the time for people to recognize your power. nobility was very strongly tied to wealth as a result. what i mean by this is: you could actually lose your status as a noble if you didn't have the requisite wealth, holdings and subjects to put on display. this was despite dynasties and bloodlines and etc being a thing. i.e. you couldn't be an "impoverished noble". if you became impoverished, you just weren't a noble anymore, end of.

thats true for the early and high middle ages at least, i think things changed a bit towards the late middle ages, but representation obv remained important throughout the middle ages and throughout the early modern era as well.

Hehehe! some of these memes are seriously fun. Time is covering the memes spawned by their own cover:

http://time.com/3987961/virtual-reality-time-magazine-cover-memes/

I don't think (aside from memes and hilarity) that the Time article/cover will have any significant impact on whether VR goes mainstream or not. It might even help to catch the interest of bystanders.

I believe VR will be mainstream if it's any good (haven't tried myself, but it seems to be according to all jorunalists and bloggers who've tested the units), the price is right and the content is available easily (and, of course, its good content).

I believe content will come, but we'll have to wait and see about prices (not only the headsets, but the hardware required to run it adequately).
