fan art or fangame, I use to find that silly, then recently that's a very good relaxing (you operate with a set of lego literrally, it remove stress of uncertainty, unknown and lack of direction that is there when creating) thing to do that's actually progressive (you train your skills, you give your own take on something existing, you exercise analysis by practice, etc ...)

I had the KFC $5 Fill Up and don't tell anyone because they don't want it getting out, but they let you switch the mashed potatoes for any other side
Don't give me shit for eating nasty

fangames are a great way to learn.
...and a great way to kill motivation when you realize you can't sell it.

...and your point is? Personally I just like having the option to try. 20 people buy it for 99 Cents each, that's dinner at Wendy's my friend. Hypothetically assuming people buy it at all.

That sounds like a terrible plan. Selling a game requires lots of extra super-boring work. You'd be lucky if people want to play your early games at all, giving you a chance to get feedback/reviews.
Also, there are plenty of reasons to create games/art beyond trying to earn petty cash.

I was being somewhat sarcastic honestly, petty cash is worthless, I like having the option to sell, and prefer to keep the game so that it doesn't infringe on copyrighted material so I have that potential, but unless the game is clearly worth something, its better to not bother trying to actually sell it.

I guess I sort of agree, but for different reasons. If you want to be able to share your work freely you (unfortunately) have to work around stupid copyright/trademark laws. I wish that wasn't the case and copying is fundamentally a good thing, but the laws are fundamentally anti-culture.

There are probably hundreds of reasons that someone might agree with my statement, yours is also a great one, one of which I can also understand quite well, and share. Its not just about the potential for money, but actually being able to share your game with others freely, without copyright getting in the way.

you can swap out art assets and change names later if cash is really that big of a deal.
legend of grimrock started as a dungeon master fangame and is commercially successful. freedom planet started as a sonic fangame and is also commercially successful.
also my background is in the fangame scene and i can tell you that the chances of actually getting c&d are tiny. publishers only get antsy when the thing you make overshadows stuff they did in some way (like the chrono trigger remake for instance) and even then only sometimes (mother 4 seems to be doing ok so far). i spent several years on a zelda fangame forum with dozens of projects and we had exactly 0 legal intervention from nintendo during my time there.
