hardly seems news worthy, pretty sure I recall talk of physical "laws" varying in different parts of the universe in the 19th century, whereby it was very well understood that such "laws" were mere approximations and are subject to revision to include additional cases.

You're talking about a science field that decided that the scientific term for the big red-colored spot found in Jupiter should be "The Great Red Spot."
