Just saw paranormal activity. Found it very dumb and with cheap effects, doesn't live up to the hype.

SEGA's doing a strange contest to try to hype up a new Sonic game that's been called 'project needlemouse'. The gist of it is that they've posted the names of about 10 of the 200 characters that have appeared in the series, and if people answer some pretty easy trivia questions each day this week, they're checking off the names of characters that will not be appearing in this new game.

It's pretty clear that half of this is designed to make fans sign up for their facebook page to get them friend requests and hits, but that's beside the point.

The general consensus that the whole thing is a sort of trick and that this is a build up to revealing that Sonic is the only character, and that all the 'friends' he's made over the years will not be appearing.

Really, I think it's a pretty clever marketing ploy if that's what they're actually doing, and it's good for both the fans and for SEGA (Who gets lots of hits on their facebook site and blogs).

I saw an interview with the guy responsible for SEGA France some time ago. Basically he said that they made a lot of market research in different countries, and the whole consensus was that children like the sonic friends (including that werewolf thing in Sonic unleashed), and he also said that the sonic games are not targeted for the sonic fans from the 90's (which have turned into adults by now), they're targeted at today's children. They're giving what their target audience wants, and succeeding at it.

The friends are here to stay. Just let Sonic die already, and stop giving into their hype. It's the same fucking cycle in every new release: people hype it, people play it, people hate it, people say they will never get fooled again, rewind and repeat.

Yeah, I went through a Sonic phase where I liked all his buddies.

I still like Big the Cat, actually. But that's more because I think friendly giants are cute characters. They're like giant kitty cats. Literally in this case, I guess.

I don't blame you. When I was a kid I thought that Tails and specially Knuckles were the shit. Those were the first friends.

Man, when I saw this thing on a magazine ad I probably got my first boner. So I understand that kids these days also get excited by new friends.

All I'm saying is that Sonic fans need to learn to let go, and accept that Sonic is not for them anymore. He has found a new home in the 2000's.

Just read through the Bruce Mau Design Manifesto and found this:

Quote from: Bruce Mau
26. Don’t enter awards competitions.
Just don’t. It’s not good for you.

Hmm...

Hmm...

Possible interpretations:

If you enter, you might find yourself rushing to make a good entry, when your goal should be to make a good game. (See Assemblee Entries that cut short at the last minute to ensure a completed game)

If you enter and lose, you might get discouraged, especially if bigger, better games hit and make yours look bad by comparison.

If you win, everyone will automatically hate you and mock you because you're no longer the underdog. Every time the name of your game is mentioned it's followed by the words "is overrated".

I DON'T PLAY THE GAMES ANYMORE BUT I KEEP ON DREAMING

*   n   * if they can target kids with sonic franchise they must be able to target adult nostalgia crowd too. One goddamn game.

Also whining about what makes modern-day sonic suck is good exercise in finding out what makes old sonic games good and being able to appreciate it and draw inspiration from the right parts (protip, slow platforming sections suck if you've got sonic 1 movement - FM music sounds awfully cool when done right, abstract pixely style of (some) environments is a very unique style) alalala etc. So I enjoy that too.

And yes, I do enjoy the old sonic games. Noone can convince me that 'they are objectively worse than my nostalgia tells me', when I was a kid playing sonic gave me euphoric feelings, and now I just plainly enjoy the fusion between hyper-synthetic colors, hyper-synthetic music and multiple layers of parallax scrolling very fast, because that's stuff I really enjoy.

But yes well I've given up on that awesome stuff (THIS IS AN OPINION D: ) that sonic was once.

I'll just try to incorporate the stuff I liked about the old sonic games in .. the games I make

I installed Windows 7 and broke GRUB in more ways that I thought possible. To fix it, I had to intentionally leave my MBR unusable so that the Windows install CD could fix it, then boot into the live CD and then fix GRUB.

I still have to see if it boots Win 7 again.
