Our neighborhood had a massive yard sale day today. This was my haul:

Promotional videotape for Banjo-Kazooie- 50 cents. Has a spot for the "upcoming" Conker's Twelve Tales, for extra shits and giggles.

Muppet Treasure Island CD-ROM- 3 bucks. I watched this movie once in theatres and played the shit out of the game when I was a kid.

Might and Magic: World of Xeen- 2 bucks. Old-school RPG from '92. Box comes with all sorts of feelies- maps, manuals, hint books, etc.

MediEvil 2- 2 bucks. Never played the first one, but I'm hoping I won't be missing out on much.

The sweet-ass chair- 10 bucks. Carried it all the way back to my house. Hella comfy.

Also, I found this inside the box for the Might and Magic game.

GOD I've always wanted a chair like that  Well, hello there!

So, I know most of us are busy with our individual projects and don't have much time for actually PLAYING games, but if you had such time, do you think you would be happy with JUST a Wii ?

I've had several 360s over the years, but they either red-ring or I have to sell them in an emergency situation or something. I like the 360, it's a nice system, but it relies so heavily on online multiplayer.

Sadly, I'm on a satellite connection because I live out in the sticks and don't own a landline phone. I pay a lot of money every month for a pretty-slow-for-broadband connection, and being satellite, I can't play online due to the unavoidable 5-second lag on EVERY single button input.

No biggie, a lot of the games I play are with my kids via local/split-screen multiplayer (They love the Left 4 Dead games  Tears of Joy ). So I'm toying with the idea of picking up another console now that my financial situation is all better and I'm currently working on a more laid-back game anyways.

A few months back I just fell in love with New Super Mario bros. Wii at a store, and I had a BEAR of a time pulling my kids away from it due to their Mario love.

So, I'm thinking to myself, there are a ton of hot Wii games coming out soon, and generally speaking like 90% of Wii multiplayer titles are split-sreen, local affairs anyways. Perhaps I should pick up a Wii, it seems to fit my needs AND I love Nintendo's games for the most part. I'm also a sucker for Light-gun games and NOBODY is doing those on the HD consoles.

I don't want to ask this on SomethingAwful or some other place where a lot of fanboying will result from a question of this nature, but do you guys who have Wiis think you would be satisfied with JUST a wii and an old PC ?

Also, I've got a pretty small TV (Around 13 inches), I plan on picking up a nice, new HDTV in November with my bonus check but until then will having such a small TV cause issues with the Wii ?

Quick question:

How much money do indie devs make from things like WiiWare, XBLIG, and the apple app store?

what percentage goes to the developer?

Honestly, Cocytus, if you're happy with what you've got, then I'd say you're all set. Like you said, there are plenty of good games for the Wii, both released and upcoming, and the Virtual Console means that even during a dry season you'll still be able to pick up something fun. There's no law that says you have to own a 360- you'll still retain your gamer badge.

Stuff about consoles

I own a Wii and a PS3. I have more Wii games than PS3 games, but I spend WAY more time on my PS3 playing old PS2 games.

I have way more download games on my Wii than on my PS3, and it feels (to me) that Wii has the better download games (like Cave Story and Lost Winds). You can also get gamecube games like mario, zelda, metroid and pikmin to balance things out.

I think that yeah, a Wii is probably a good choice for an only console, since you can get plenty of mileage out of just buying Nintendo's games and checking out virtual console and getting a few multiplayer titles. PS3's a great choice if you buy a lot of used PS2 games, since they're so plentiful. Never had an XBox, so I can't say anything about it.

Besides, most of the Wii lineup should be a little more kid-friendly than Left 4 Dead Wink (I'm not looking at you, MadWorld!)

I own no "current gen" console, the most modern is a GameCube with about a dozen games, but at least there are also lots of good games for that one. They run natively on the Wii and nearly none should be expensive at all Smiley From what I've heard having a bunch of GameCube or "Classic" controllers for the Wii is preferable, anyway, as even some Wii games play better with that than the Wii remote.

I guess you mainly have to ask yourself how much you need the modern "hardcore" games, i.e. mostly the shooters and other action games. The Wii has few (good ones) of those. But, at least if I was really more than anything looking for fun splitscreen multiplayer, I guess from what I know I'd be happy with a Wii, especially with the GameCube games available to back that up.

I had forgotten about the Gamecube compatibility ! I really loved Eternal Darkness, I wonder how hard that is to find nowadays ?

Oooh, the backwards compatibility really sweetens the pot.

As far as gamecube controllers go, I'd say a direct comparison would be like this (having mario kart in mind)
---from best to worst
Original GC controller
Mad catz GC controller
wii classic
wiimote with wii motion plus
wavebird
---anything below this line is horrible
wiimote
any generic plastic wiimote attachment
gamestop© gamecube controller...your fingers will bleed.
