I've been trying to better manage myself, since there's a lot of stuff I should be doing, but ain't. WTF This isn't dead though, I have... ideas. Update will probably come this weekend.

So yeah, got a problem. Playing this thing somehow many of the custom names I gave dwarves just vanished. I don't know who's who anymore. WTF

Check your init, maybe you changed something with alias placement?

Huh, never heard of that happening before. But if you can't fix the problem you've left quite a few clues as to who's who in your updates in the form of images, like these here, here, here, here, here, here, and possibly elsewhere.

I'll try to check those out. Things are even worse to figure out now thanks to... developments.

Okay, here's the thing. Before I noticed the lack of custom names, we had a goblin siege. I count the adult dead in 3, with also a baby.

Meaning the TIGers in the military have gotten a bit hard to deduce.

I'll try to figure it out before my next update, or just go with what would make a more interesting story if I can't manage.

I also need more goddamn soldiers.

And what's the best protection against bolts? Most of them died from bleeding from the nearly dozen goblin crossbow users.

Shields.  I'm pretty sure it's shields.  Assign them all shields and they'll learn to use them when they spar.

I'd like a military dwarf, as long as he's got a shield. :p

Fortifications work great if you wanna play it safe and not melee. But then again, safe = boring.

Also, the best defense is a lava offense.

I was working on my glass fortified wall when they came, and it wasn't nearly complete. I would probably have lost no one if it was, since I have three legendary marksdwarves and plenty of ammo. Once that's done I'll probably focus on building a military mostly composed of marksdwarves.

Might also come in handy if I find a certain 'pit'.

Also, this was my first goblin siege in DF. Tongue I never bothered to continue a fortress much past the early phases.

Oh, cool. Yeah, crossbow wielding goblins can be a real nuisance. I don't usually notice, because I prefer to shoot at them from behind walls and only using melee dwarves to slaughter any fleeing survivors. Those who prefer the badassitude of melee sometimes tone down or even remove crossbows from goblin sieges.  Shrug

But yeah, shields are probably a good start. They're pretty much a must for any military dwarf anyways.

Can a dwarf dodge arrows with enough wrestling skill, by the way?

Beats me.

But hopefully most of the fortifications will be ready by the time the next siege comes. Then it should be smooth sailing. Unless they bring trolls.

You've jinxed it.

Also, crossgoblins make melee legendaries an even more worthy achievement for any dwarf.

Most of my dwarves had legendary or near legendary wrestling skill. but I guess all the dodging in the world doesn't help you against a rain of bolts.
