http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/694665/Judge-Mathis-Making-Game-Featuring-Prison-Rape.html

Quote
Television Judge Greg Mathis and director Matty Rich say they are teaming up to make a game for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 called Mathis “Detroit” Street Judge.

Rich directed excellent indie urban drama Straight out of Brooklyn in the early 90s and not-so-excellent video game 187 Ride or Die in 2005, and Mathis settles the disputes of the lost and hopeless on syndicated TV. So the pairing is interesting, to say the least. The duo plan to make a Grand Theft Auto-style action game featuring prison rape.

“The main difference between our game and Grand Theft Auto is that players will have to deal with the justice system and consequences for their actions,” said Mathis. “When you go to prison, you gain credibility when you come back on the streets. On the other hand, when you go to prison you can also be raped. So take your chances. We may see young people who make the wrong choice and go to prison and are assaulted repeatedly (in this game).”

I wonder what would happen if the game were made by, say, an actual judge.

Uh it doesnt seem like a rape sim actually if you read what he says:
Quote
when you go to prison you can also be raped
Looks like YOU'RE gonna get raped not the other way round...
How did this turn into a sim? Really should be a "Sim game where you can get raped"

The "sim" part was a joking reference to the recent controversy of calling The Path a rape sim game. Was probably stupid to include it since that was a stupid claim, but I couldn't resist the similarity -- this is *really* a game about rape, instead of a game just being accused of that.

As for a game made by an actual judge, I believe there was a game in the early 80s where you were asked to be the jury of various cases: they gave you all the facts of real cases (cases that happened in real life in various courts) and the player judged the evidence and judged whether the defendant was guilty or innocent. It then told you the real results to see if your judgment matched real life. That strikes me as entirely different from this, which is just "you can do crimes just like GTA, but you'll be punished for them and go to jail if you do".

this is gunna be epic.
when you go to prison it should be just like Hard Time + rape. I've always imagined a GTA game where you have to actually play through the prison segments after going on killing sprees. You should age in prison too and when you get out you'll be an old-ass man who has no idea what's going on anymore. Procedurally generated lingo will have arisen and you won't have any clue what people are saying anymore. If you try and go on another spree you'll have a heart attack.

I want to see a GTA-style game made by Judge Judy.

That's pretty damn interesting, though it would be hard to capture the intangibles, such as witness body language and inflection, that actually cause a jury to determine the credibility of testimony.

That's what I thought about -- unless you actually see the defendant and lawyers in court, their expressions, etc., the decision will be different than the actual jury's experience. But it was still a nice idea.

Sounds like an attempt to de-glorify gangsters my emasculating them, the point will probably be lost on the target audience who has no interest in their heroes being literally raped. This will only play well with hipsters.

Yes. I imagine Judge Mathis, sitting back, lighting his upper class cigar, thinking "How can I get those worthless youngsters in inner cities to appreciate THE LAW? Oh, they like games right? I'll make a game where you if you commit a crime you will get THROWN IN JAIL! And then RAPED!" -- not realizing that not all games are as popular as GTA and simply making a game won't mean people will play it. (And also not realizing that usually they perform crime because they aren't as rich as he is, not because they don't take the consequences of their actions seriously.)

I don't know if you are being facetious, but pulling himself up from being a thug to a judge is pretty much his thing. I could, as well, imagine such a scene; substituting lighting a cigar with signing away his likeness for a game.

What! He used to be a criminal himself? Didn't know that (probably cause I don't watch TV much.) That makes it even worse, he's betraying his roots!

Quote from: Judge Mathis
Troubled kids? I was one. Gangs? Jail? I was there. Second chances? I got one. I went to law school, became a lawyer, and then a judge. Now I get to *give* second chances. It's time for hard decisions and tough love. Justice that makes a difference; *that's* what I'm about!

So yeah, tough love.

I've never heard of that game (Colors), but it gets points for referring to cops as pigs -- did GTA even do that? It probably wasn't allowed.

Anyway, that quote makes me want to look up some Mathis clips on YouTube to see what else he says. Smiley
