Hey everyone,
Just something that I've been wondering for a while; how good are actual indie devs at games? Do you think of yourself as a casual, or hardcore gamer? Do you think you need to be particularly good at gaming to be a developer?

Heh, I am not the greatest at gaming but I am pretty damn resilient if I say so myself. I don't really think of myself as "hardcore" or "casual" I think that those labels are kind of silly really but sometimes I guess I am a bit of both. Variety is the spice of games and I love variety. Something that is new always intrigues me.
I don't know why you would have to be good at games in order to develop them. I mean, do you really think that Miyamoto is the best Zelda player ever? I think that the best devs are probably those that have been stumped and figured it out through persistence and finally were inspired to use the same dynamic in their games. I would love to make a platformer as hardcore as Mega Man but don't I don't think that I have to be a Mega Man master to make one.
I think that I am good enough at gaming to be able to tell what people who play games would want to play.

I am either a really good casual gamer or a moderately crappy and non-persistent hardcore gamer

I am okay? I am actually not sure, I don't see other 'real' gamers often. I think I am above average, at the least.

I'm a hardcore gamer when it comes to classic games. Most newer games I'm more of a casual/serious gamer. I have this complex where I'll play something nonstop, like SF4 for about a week. And I'll play then I'll get bored with it and move on.
Older games though I can play over and over again without getting tired of them. So I'm in a really awkward position. But I'd say I'm better than most casual gamers.

In competition against other people when the only different factor was skill, I was victorious constantly.
Granted, only one of those was a gamer, and a console one to boot.

Eh... I'd say 'serious'. I enjoy hardcore and casual games, and don't play games more than a couple of hours (usually) at a time.

Depends on the genre. I am somewhere between novice and decent at: -Real Time Strategy games -RPGs -2D Fighters -3D Third Person Action games -PC-style First Person Shooters
I am pretty good at: -Most 2D Action games (shmups, platformers, metroidvanias...) -Smash Bros -Soul Calibur -Console-Style First Person Shooters
I am not tournament level or speedrunner level at anything. I have other ways to spend my time. However, I am an armchair speedrunner, and I like to try to play platformers as quickly as possible.

this rings true. i'm only a hardcore gamer when it comes to really interesting games (i.e. thief, system shock). skillz? i can't harm you unless it's an fps where i may be able to do something...but yeah, i'm harmless. plus, i have perfect timing

I can get to a level where I won't embarrass myself at tournaments with basically any game given enough practice, but I'll probably never be truly great at any game. I'm just not obsessive enough. I usually play on hard to keep things interesting where possible though.

I hate the labels hardcore and casual.
That said, i'm either a hardcore casual gamer, or a casual hardcore gamer.

I am usually decent against cpus. Even the hard ones. Against other humans I fail miserably in all aspects. I am on par with (maybe even better than) my brother, who is as avid a gamer as I, but if I try playing online I will make no kills, land no blows, and outstrategize no one.
I can occasionally manage do some "tough" runs of games. Minimal item, hard mode, speedrun type stuff. I die alot when I do those, and my speedruns are very very slow, but it's the effort that matters, yeah? I have not beaten Cave Story. Beat Twilight Princess on 3 hearts in a day without dying but that game doesn't count because it sucks is way too easy.

I'd say I'm pretty good at games, although I don't play often.

Apparently I can pick up a game I've never played before and kick ass at it five minutes later. I've had people brag on my mad gaming skills.

I would say I'm okay at videogames. I generally don't spend enough time with a single game to get to a competitive level. I also generally focus on single player games (probably partially for this reason).

I feel like im good with multiplayer shooter games. but then most of the games i play match you up with someone of the same skill level
no, well, i can't really measure skill in single player games, i just beat most of those through trial and error

Your skill at playing games has absolutely nothing to do with how competent you are as a developer. Just look at Cactus!
