I can beat classic Tetris, Game B, Level 9 High 5.  And I'm pretty good at games that require patient and methodical playing, like Thief.

But I really suck at skill-based games - especially those that require you to play through a level again and again until you get good at it.  If a game isn't going to keep giving me new experiences - even if the only reason I can't reach them is because it's too hard - then I'll go play something else.

The genres I'm good at are RTS and 2D fighters I suppose.  FPS too I guess, but when 90% of the commercial games out there are shooters, who isnt?

Hey everyone,

Just something that I've been wondering for a while; how good are actual indie devs at games?  Do you think of yourself as a casual, or hardcore gamer?  Do you think you need to be particularly good at gaming to be a developer?

i think i was quite hardcore years ago. I've spent my childhood and the collage years playing a freaking lot of time.

Now i prefer online shooters to anything else, and i think i'm quite skilled.
Unluckly newer games doesn't interest me too much, they bore me after the very first minutes because the long time required even to get started.
Today even the dumbest game has 10 to 30 mins of tutorial crapness or totally dumb initial gameplay

I'm a hardcore gamer when it comes to classic games. Most newer games I'm more of a casual/serious gamer. I have this complex where I'll play something nonstop, like SF4 for about a week. And I'll play then I'll get bored with it and move on.

Older games though I can play over and over again without getting tired of them. So I'm in a really awkward position. But I'd say I'm better than most casual gamers.
This! Thing is, you can't be a hardcore gamer with the latest mainstream games, 'cause they're simply not hard enough. For example I'm unsure if fable 2 can really be considered a game at all, since it's pronounced purpose is that every part of the game should be possible to experience by every player regardless of skill, and you can't die in it. Isn't that more of an interactive sandbox type of application?

In bioshock you spawn a few rooms back with your gear intact if you die, and can just rush into the room and continue killing off the enemies you have already damaged. Halo 3 and gears of war 2 are just dissapointingly easy.

You can't be hardcore these days, the closest you get is the indie scene.

Kinda this.

Apparently I really truly suck ass at games when I first play them, but if I like them, then I just keep playing until I'm at least better than anyone else I know in real life. Still usually get my ass handed to me on SFIV, but with most games I can usually hold my own on the internets.

I'm not a very competitive gamer, I prefer personal enjoyment over getting all worked up trying to beat a certain level/boss/whatever ending up all grumpy.
Although I never play a game on the "Easy Mode", I rarely try and play the harder modes, with some exceptions of a bunch of games that I really liked.

In short, I only try to excel in games that I'm really into, as a rating I'm somewhere between average and good.

I'm D or at the most D+ rank on iccup at Starcraft, which is the computer game arguably played at the highest competitive skill level in the world. D rank is pretty bad (the only thing worse is D-), but it's still above the average non-Korean Starcraft player on Battle.net, who typically have no knowledge of build orders or strategy since all they play are money maps like "Fastest Possible Map" and "Big Game Hunters".

I am fairly good at Super Punch Out, getting very high speeds against every character. Me and my brother Haggard spent a lot of time trying to beat each other's records in that game.

I got to the EX levels in Shoot the Bullet, but didn't beat them. But just getting to them itself is an achievement, considering how hard that game is.

I once beat Gannon (yes, two n's, not one) in Zelda 1 with the wooden sword.

Whenever anyone talks about categorising into casual and hardcore, it makes me think of that scene from Donnie Darko where they have that lecturer talking to them about love and fear. He places them on opposite ends of a line and states that every situation can be placed at some point on that line when it is obvious this is not true. Same idea with casual and hardcore, some people just choose to sit above the line in their own little category making these categories ineffective.

What is your fastest against Piston Hurricane?

I am a good game player, I pick up most games pretty quick. I've never played competitively because I move on before I get really good at a game. Well other then my family's tournaments, the only person to win more then me is my brother.

I don't really remember -- I think it was around 6 seconds or so if I remember. I lost the data when the SNES cart's memory was wiped. This guy did it in under 6 seconds and that was also the strategy I used: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_IVHLMNjUI

Yeah, the main thing to realize is that in any part of their attack, there are four spots to hit, and always at least one of them can be hit that will counter their punch. You can learn which through experimentation. After you learn which spot counters which punch, you basically can't be hit anymore and don't need to block or duck at all.

I like this one, there's a simultaneous hit right before the second knockdown: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zSrb-OoDyk

I used to have average Pro Evolution Soccer skills and above-average NBA Live skills. I don't play games for competitive reasons that much, though.

I'm pretty good at rhythm-based games, but I suck at old-school games, especially 2D platformers (which is why I've never been able to complete a single 2D Mario). I'm decent at console FPSs, mostly because I like to be the nutjob that throws sticky grenades into crowds and drive cars up stairs to run over players.
