I'm really good at Brawl, but my brothers are even better and can beat me every time. We do some pretty crazy stuff, i.e. rolling, shield-grabbing, air dodging the dragoon, ledge hog KOs, short jumps, perfect-shield deflecting bob-ombs, air dodging sticky bombs and the lava wave in the Norfair stage, and all that other crazy stuff. I sometimes get challenged by people who brag "I'm the best!". When they say that, I know they suck and are full of themselves, so I crush them. Good times.

Knowing that some players will best you at your own game is part of the development fun, I think Developers should be alright game players though, otherwise how will they know how to make a good challenging game?

I used to consider myself average at best, but then saw lots of people having problems beating I don't have much problems with, and sometimes they can't even beat them. So now, I have no idea.
I guess I'm good with platformers and FPS. I can win most 4x in normal without problems, I can play Starcraft against CPU or beat the campaigns, and tactics games beat me in awful ways once they start getting hard, although I managed to improve playing X-Com, so it might be lack of practice, in part. I completely suck at fighting, racing and sports games, but I've never played them.

Usually I enjoy playing games until I'm really awesome at them. At that point, it turns into a sport. I know I'm awesome when I beat the shit out of other basically all other players (I am talking about multiplayer games). As soon as the point is reached where I kick ass at a game, the fun comes entirely from being the best on a server/in a room. It's much fun as long as I find good competition and win against them.
I will eventually reach a point where I get bored with the game, though, because there just is not enough good competition, and then I stop playing the game. After I reached this stage, the game is useless to me because it will take months until I feel like playing it again, and after this period of abstinence and getting-awesome-at-other-games I lost most of my Being Superior To Everyone Else and just can't enjoy playing anymore. Happened with basically every multiplayer game so far. It's not a bad process all in all, though.

Sadly, I'm with Super Joe as I don't actually play games all that much anymore. Still playing a bit of Starcraft against friends though, and consider myself pretty decent at it. I love logic-based adventures/platformers and whatnot, but I don't really see how being 'good' at them count, I mostly try having fun with them, breaking them if possible.

We should play StarCraft. Maybe have a TIGSource tournament for everyone on these forums who plays it

I think I'm a decent gamer all around, I can usually pick a game up and excel at it in a few minutes, but I think most of us probably follow into that category, it just comes from having an understanding of gaming vernacular.
I like to think I have above average FPS reflex's, mostly because I play entirely too much TF2. I'm decent at other multiplayer FPSs as well, but TF2 is my forte.

Edit: oh, and we can try some one-on-one too if your up to it, but I'm probably not good enough. I fear the battle.net :D Edit2: Sorry for derailing the thread.

This! Thing is, you can't be a hardcore gamer with the latest mainstream games, 'cause they're simply not hard enough. For example I'm unsure if fable 2 can really be considered a game at all, since it's pronounced purpose is that every part of the game should be possible to experience by every player regardless of skill, and you can't die in it. Isn't that more of an interactive sandbox type of application?
In bioshock you spawn a few rooms back with your gear intact if you die, and can just rush into the room and continue killing off the enemies you have already damaged. Halo 3 and gears of war 2 are just dissapointingly easy.
You can't be hardcore these days, the closest you get is the indie scene.
I'll call bullshit here. If legendary mode on Halo 3 is too easy for you, just go ahead and play multiplayer. Really, it's pretty much impossible for a multiplayer game to ultimately be "too easy" since you're only challenged as much as the opponent you're facing. Barring multiplayer though... what about Ninja Gaiden II? Try some of the purple coin levels on Mario Galaxy. Ikaruga? Ok, maybe too niche... Resident Evil 5 Mercenaries Mode? While I understand where you're coming from about games pandering to the lowest common denominator, there are still very challenging games out there. If you honestly think mainstreams games today are too easy you're just not looking hard enough. We should play StarCraft. Maybe have a TIGSource tournament for everyone on these forums who plays it Sounds like a splendid idea! If we could just get enough people in on it, I'd sure be down. Edit: oh, and we can try some one-on-one too if your up to it, but I'm probably not good enough. I fear the battle.net :D Edit2: Sorry for derailing the thread. I want to play! I'm sure I could get some people around here to join up as well. Epic 4v4?!?!?! TigMatch? :handshakeR: EDIT: oh yea, and as for the initial question... i'm super competitive.

I'll start a new thread for it. I'd prefer it be a series of 1v1's, everyone plays everyone else, with observers (the people not playing can watch until it's their turn), rather than a 4v4 or a FFA, since those are less strategic and more about luck.

Im above "noob" at all genres, but I am not pro at any genre. I mildly suck at shooters, suck at most strategy games (but love them), above-average in RPGs (yum yum numbercrunching), okayish in fighting games.... Well, I am "good enough" to enjoy almost any game, I'd say. If you're too good at a game, you won't be able to play it with your friends anymore, because you're always going to win, so I like it the way it is.

I agree, it's kinda nice to suck just the right amount. XP I usually find that once I become too good at a game, it starts to lose some of its fun. That's not a knock on having good game skills- I just think that there's a lot of fun in improving yourself and learning how a game (or genre of games) works as well.

I'm decent, and I pick up on new games easily, so I think I can say I'm a decent hardcore gamer. I'm mostly good at platformers and shooters, and I can play pretty much any other kind of game well too. I don't think you can easily measure a person's skill towards videogames anyway, but I guess we all have opinions, right?

I suck/kick ass with a 99% duty cycle on fpses. It is well worth it for the reactions I get during that last 1% of the cycle.

Not as good as I used to be... I think once I got more into design I lost my skills as a player I can still kick ass, but there's definitely people who can beat me now.
