Parasol

"parere" + "sol" essentially means to parry the sun.

Ha. That's a fantastic one.

The only ones i can think of off the top of my head are 'blimey' which is short for cor blimey, originally 'god blind me'. Similarly crikey is 'cripple me'.

And yeah who on earth thinks peruse means to read thoroughly?

Decimated means destroying one tenth of something.

I think that was destroying 9/10th, so that only one tenth is left.

I think decimation was a punishment for a group of soldiers, if they didn't do what they were told one random tenth was going to get shot. If it was the other way around you would soon loose your army.

I'm too tired to open up another(an other) tab and look it up at wikipedia.

You're right: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decimation_(Roman_army)

I was wrong with my idea. Sorry for the confusion.

There's only one thing left to do- restore the contracted words to their original meaning and use them in every day speech!

Karma.  We use it to mean some force that balances out your actions immediately or while you are still alive.  The original meaning is that it's a tally balanced out over your whole life and it's only cashed out to determine what you get reincarnated as when you die.

And it's a contraction of which words?

Does "okay" count?  As the spelled-out version of OK, which (as I understand) came from the purposeful misspelling of "All Correct" as "Oll Korrect"?

If you'd count it as a contraction, that is.

And it's a contraction of which words?

I thought we had expanded with the inclusion of "decimation" into the territory of anything that we've warped the meaning of.  I happily rescind my submission.

I resent that statement.

I just realized that the German word "offensichtlich" (which means obvious/obviously)
sounds suspiciously like a combination of "offen" (open/clear) and "ersichtlich" (apparent; evident).

Obviously.
