What the hell is this. It's like minesweeper meets Chip's Challenge. But with chess pieces? Anyway it is real short. You probably shouldn't even play it. Also be on the lookout for: *** Edit: Once you beat the big badasses and clean out the chess board you're supposed to win, aren't you? Aren't you? Where's your fat reward and your big ticket home? What the hell is this? It's not supposed to end this way! Chessmine 2*** Edit again: I am so impressed with my ability to throw things together time and time again that I want to share with you all the official Chessmine web site. It lacks all the standard features such as a link to the source, screenshots, and even a forum.

You SHOULD play this.
It's neat.
EDIT: What the hell happened at the end, though?

Yeah, I got pretty far, if it is truly short. Of what I saw, it was really inventive and gave way to excellent puzzles. And Chip's Challenge is awesome, so if you took an inspiration from that, congrats.
EDIT: (It doesn't suck as much as he says it does. Not even close.)

Good game. It has some nice, challenging, and well-crafted puzzles . But yeah, it's too short . Make more puzzles. EDIT: What the hell happened at the end, though? I was also a little confused by this. But I guess we'll find out in the sequel

Quite a fun game. Makes you plan out your moves in advanced, which is what a puzzle game should do. Although returning to the start with the key often seems a bit redundant, at least on the early levels, since you can generally just retrace your steps.

This is excellent! I saw this on indiegames.com and loved the idea of wondering wandering around a chess board, interacting with it this way. This is definitely the kind of puzzle game I like, and thanks for reminding me of Chip's Challenge!

Like Shoo I also saw this on the indiegames blog and I couldn't wait to play it. I Love the puzzles however the game is too short, and the lack of narration really makes you wonder whats going on at the end.
But all I can really say is I love this game and can't wait for the sequel.

what
Chessmine is getting mentioned on IndieGames.com?
I cannot begin to comprehend why this is: Chessmine is basically a joke game. The THING at the end of the game is not a boss and it is not a storytelling device. I thought to myself, "Hey, everyone likes EarthBound, I bet I could put a big mess of squigglies at the end of my game and everybody would love it." I didn't expect to be right.
The engine was thrown together over the course of a couple of days and just over half of the 8 8x8 levels in this game should really count as actual puzzles.
If this game is any good I'm afraid I do not see it.
The only bright side is, I guess Chessmine Episode 2: The Shores of Hell (I wanted to make it even more ridiculous than the original, even in the title) should take a day or two more to complete, possibly with sound.

It's highly original. Even if you spent a year making a mario clone, I probably wouldn't even try it. This game caught my attention with its original looking setup and execution. That's what made me like it.

Not sure why you're being quite so self effacing but the use of the chess pieces, the puzzles and even the simplified grayscale look really is very good. I really enjoyed playing through the levels at lunch. The squiggly mess and ditching the app was a bit odd though.

Nice. I'm an avid chess player & puzzle game player/designer aficionado, so I enjoyed it much. The idea is pretty clever! It's a tad short/easy as it is though, are you planning to extend it in a "full lenght" puzzle game?

Chessmine is basically a joke game. If that was your intention then you have failed. What you've gone and done is accidentally make a good game. Everyone point and laugh at his failure

Maybe it's reverse psychology?
Hey, dude! Your game sucks! Don't make any more games!
There, now he will probably make like ten sequels. And I will play them all.

This was a really fun game.
That's basically my whole message.
I liked the concept, you executed it very well, all's good and dandy.
I'm interested to see what Chessmine: The Shores of Hell will be like.

Yeah, that's a sweet name for a sequel. Take your time and do as much as you can with it. That's all I ask.

I don't feel much like taking my time or doing as much as I can with it, sorry. Trying to make a truly good game out of this would be like wringing blood from a particularly ugly stone, so instead I just did what I did for the first game and threw together some stuff. Here is the second game, it doesn't even have sound. I tried writing some music but it turned out pretty poorly, even by Chessmine standards. It's 50% longer than the original Chessmine so if you were a fan of the original you might like this? I tossed the original style out the window and it's mostly got some weird timed puzzles though so I don't know maybe not. I know I should probably make a real game out of this, one with a decent amount of puzzles, consistent rules, a solid engine, sound, decent graphics, so on and so forth, but that would be pretty boring to make. I'm not too great at making these little puzzles either, that's why there's very few actual chess type puzzles in this one and a bunch of random crap instead.
