My birthday is in a month and I was strongly considering getting a 360 after playing on my little bro's 360 back home over Christmas break. However, we've been in this current generation of consoles for almost 4 years now (WOW!) and the next generation is breaking over the horizon now. I'm just wondering how much longer this current generation will hold its value, and if it's even worth it to get in on it this late in the game.

it's never too late. I bought a ps2 about 3 months after the ps3 came out. it has been well worth it. I don't think we're _that_ close to the new generation of consoles, in a lot of respects they are just coming into their own (especially the ps3) with their online services/marketplaces.

Eh, they're both pretty much the same IMO. The reason I intend to get a 360 is because more of my friends and family members have a 360 rather than a PS3, and I want to get this largely for the social aspect, so it just makes sense to get a 360.

When they release the PS4 I plan to camp out and get a PS2.

I spent 5 hours standing in various lines to get the incredible virtual reality console the day it was released. I'm only beginning to feel justified in having one thanks to Night Game and Super Meat Boy.

At least SMB will have a PC release, because there's no way in hell I'm getting a Wii.

I totally agree. You've got a nice back catalogue, cheaper prices on the console itself, and years until the next ones crop up. You'll enjoy yourself plenty, trust me. I, myself, have a 360. They're good, especially now that most of the friggin' bugs have been ironed out. I had a laser which devoured disks whole. Bot only very slowly. That was Bad. I still rather like it, though. Games are fun. I'd get a PS3, but, . Maybe a year or two down the track.

The longer you wait, the cheaper it gets--until it becomes a collector's item. The key is to nab it at the bottom of the curve.

I'd say go for it. I'm still waiting for the PS3 to come into my budget :D I'd get an Xbox but I'm scared off by their pay to play online subscription thingy... as if broadband didn't cost enough as it is Also because I have a decent PC and there just aren't enough 360 exclusives to make it worth getting.

NES's are still pretty cheap second hand.

No matter when you buy a system it's still going to have the same number of games total. I'm still in the process of buying and acquiring a library for all the consoles I missed out on.

still lot of games coming so get one ... and add me if you ever get 360 and for "console war" they both have like 5 good exclusives http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360_exclusives * http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:PlayStation_3-only_games*does not list 360+pc exclusive ones :/\(mass effect, gears 1) both of them have lot of goodie multiplatform games No matter when you buy a system it's still going to have the same number of games total. yea but online games will be affected :/\

It's never too late, I still buy NES cartridges and play 'em. Thing is, a good game will always be a good game, even years from now. Now, to be honest, with the current consoles I would fear some misc stuff like how long will Microsoft continue supporting the faulty Xbox 360 hardware? How long is gonna be the Xbox 360 Live service around once the next Xbox is out? Etc. Get a PS2 instead! :D

I actually think it's way too early to buy a current-gen console. It's best to buy consoles a generation later, it saves tons of money. I'm living in the PS2 generation right now, you can get a PS2 and PS2 games very cheaply, and there are a lot of great games for it. By waiting until a console generation is over before getting into it, you not only save a ton of money, but you also get the benefit of being able to pick and choose the absolute best games of that generation and not waste time with overhyped games; you can rely on firm recommendations from friends instead of having to guess which games are good, and so on. So I'd say wait another few years, *then* buy a 360. That's when I plan to buy one, around 2012 or so.

I would quite like a 360, but I'm waiting until I can be sure that the hardware that I buy off the shelf will be stable.

This console genreation will last lots more than the last one, so it isn't late. There are stimations of about 8 or more years before the next gen. And hardware isn't advancing enough to justify a new gen in one or two years, and there isn't any talking about a PS4 or anything like that.
