Now is actually a great time to buy, system prices are low and there are a slew of good games on both systems worth playing out right now or coming soon. It's probably going to be another couple of years before they even start talking about the next generation of consoles and even longer before you can afford one Smiley

The most current console I own is a GameCube. I've considered getting a 360 because XNA looks pretty neat, but then I get to thinking "well, sure, I could get a 360, but I bet the XBox 720 (or whatever it will be called) will come out right as I'm putting the finishing touches on my 360-based XNA masterpiece."

Then I realize I should just get to work and actually make something first.

I think if it weren't for XNA (that is, no chance of developing anything for any of the consoles) I'd probably be leaning towards a PS3.

The next generation of consoles will not be very interesting anyway. It will just be the same as today with a 3D card a bit more powerful, nothing to get excited about.

This generation is probably going to last a lot longer than the last one. Development costs are daunting as it is. I don't think many developers will be too interested in sticking with the usual 4-6 year console cycle that we've had.

not to mention many titles for this gen still arnt out yet.

there is no way sony will be making a new once, based on the number of units still not bought, the state of their stock value, and the fact that HUGE titles for the PS3 like Final Fantasy are not even out yet.

the WII and 360 will just stick around since they are doing fine.

Cool, thanks for the feedback guys... I didn't think it was too late to buy, either- maybe it's just a matter of not being sure to drop $300+ on something like that when I should be putting it towards a new computer.

The next generation of consoles will not be very interesting anyway. It will just be the same as today with a 3D card a bit more powerful, nothing to get excited about.

haha, that's how I felt about this gen.

Hehe, people keep mentioning FFXIII with PS3, but you know it's not an exclusive, right?

That's when I plan to buy one, around 2012 or so.

But won't the world be over by then?

I actually think it's way too early to buy a current-gen console. It's best to buy consoles a generation later, it saves tons of money.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Even though I do have a 360, only paid $199 for it though so I could justify it. Sad thing is, I bought a PS2 recently and don't even touch my 360 except to stream video with tversity. After I bought my 360 I realized that there weren't that many great games when it comes down to it. Don't get me wrong, the 360 has some pretty good games (Mass Effect, Fallout 3, Midnight Club etc..) but it just hasn't released any games that are doing anything to terribly different from previous gens.

Like moi said, don't get too excited all the next gen will be is the natural progression of technology. Besides the next generation concerns me somewhat due to the popularity of games now and the booming casual market.

I just decided to sell my Quad-Core recently. I realized that it is just better to wait it out because technology is always getting cheaper and I can probably eventually get the same rig for half of the price. The thing is I never used the extra power nor cared to. Lately I have been playing Ico and Persona 3 and various indie games. It's expensive to be ahead of the curve when it comes to gaming and I would rather just be a little bit behind and save a few bucks because when it comes down to it all games are really the same essentially with a greater or lesser degree of polish.

My advice would be to get a 360 if you really want to get a console right now. Live decent if you are into that and the games marketplace has some pretty good stuff (Castle Crashers, Geometry Wars 2 etc..) and the 360 can stream content from your computer as well. $199 is a hard price to beat too. Otherwise I would say you should just run down to your local pawn shop and pick up a PS2 (fat) for $50.

Problem with buying consoles later is online play.

Yeah, it's the online play I'm worried about... I'm afraid that by the time I get to playing Left 4 Dead or Resident Evil 5, everyone else will be done with it.

A lot of people on here seem to like the PS2, and I have one, but it's just collecting dust. I've played most of the hits and there really isn't anything left for me on that system. I also have an N64 (which gets played when I have friends over) and a DS (which I enjoyed playing for a while but haven't really had the time for lately)

Maybe I don't have time for a 360 for that matter, either.

Yeah, it is different if you are looking to play on live. I play all of my online games on pc for free so I don't really have much of a use for live anyways. On the note of Left 4 Dead or Resident Evil 5 being bereft of players I don't think you are likely to see that anytime soon unless M$ shuts down live. There are a few games on live that still have an active online community even though they were released at launch or weren't popular titles to begin with (Shadowrun and Perfect Dark come to mind).

I don't really play much on my PS2 except for Rock Band, Midnight Club, and Innocent Life.

If you have a PS2, I'd recommend looking up all of the quirky little games that got lost in the shuffle years ago. They're not perfect, but they're different and dirt-cheap. For instance, I picked up The Getaway for 3 bucks, and it's more than worth that much money. Some other interesting games:

Lifeline (requires microphone/headset)
Chulip
Gladius
Gitaroo Man
Amplitude/FreQuency
Aeon Flux

maybe I can recommend you some great ps2/ps1 games, then. you can't have played all of them. what kind of genres do you like? I know you liked crystalis and such, but do you also like jRPGs? the ps2 has some pretty good ones, like persona 3, persona 4, and suikoden 5. if you don't, you could also try games like kagero: deception (wonderful underrated ps1 game). you've probably played megaman legends 1 and 2, but if not, they're really great, probably my absolute favorite games for the ps1.

another one I want to try is legend of kay, i've heard great things about it.

I've found it hard to find PS1 games in stores, which is unfortunate, seeing as there are probably more good PS1 games than PS2 games.
