And it's $24 if you want to buy it.

When I first heard about this I thought it'd actually be free, not just free to play for a single day. Kind of disappointing. But I don't like FPS games anyway so I doubt I'll even try it today (would be a huge download anyway).

Everyone should take advantage of this if they dont own it yet, L4D is a really good game.  At first I was put off because it's yet another zombie game but the co-op nature really makes this shine.  All the game modes are fun in their own way including the new survival mode.  Plus it has that Valve charm.  Best enjoyed with friends.

It's pretty much useless as anything other than a 3-4 player co-op experience.  Then it's awesome.  But yeah, if you don't like shooting things from a first person perspective you might give it a pass.

As long as it's free, I'd recommend even the most anti-FPS person to give it a go. Especially if the developer commentary is included in the free-for-24-hours version. The commentary doesn't make any grand revelations or anything, but it's always interesting to hear about various game design decisions... it's education, to say the least.

Also, the game in general is a whole lot of fun. The only person I've met who has played Left 4 Dead and didn't like it was someone who gets motion sickness from FPS games.

Yeah, it might be fun even if you aren't an FPS person.  It's more about the co-op experience and yelling bloody murder into the mic when you turn a corner and giant fat zombies appear out of nowhere and puke zombie-summoning sauce right in your face.

It's a pretty awesome game and I like it myself, but I think if you don't enjoy playing FPS games by yourself, you're not gonna enjoy it with others either.

I'd suggest Paul try it as it's free, but it's quite a download so I'm just gonna say "pass".

I wonder how many good games people pass up because it's an "FPS" or the download is too big.   Roll Eyes

I also do get motion sickness from FPS games, usually. Although oddly I had no problem with Fallout 3 -- perhaps because it didn't involve a lot of motion, and battles were almost turn-based.

Saying you won't like this because you don't like FPS-games is sort of like saying you'll hate Metroid Prime because you hate FPS-games.

At least that's how it was to me, I generally hate FPS-games...  Shrug

I'm usually not affected by motion sickness but I played And Yet It Moves the other day and it really messed me up.  I can only play it for 10-20 minutes at a time.

Yeah. It's almost as if some people would rather play games they like. Bizarre.

Anyway. Thanks for the heads up. Been sort of waiting for a good price on that one (don't really know if I like it that much, and can't play it on this broken mess of a computer, but I'm under a legal obligation to buy everything that has Patton in it).

And Yet It Moves messes up my head. Actually, any game that involves rotating the screen with certain keys messes me up.

Returning to the topic: It's a very good game, Paul, but it's up to you to decide if you want to try it. It is very fast paced, though.

...but how would you know if you like it if you completely dismiss it because it falls into a "genre" that the majority of games today belong in.

Well, as I said, it's not just that I don't like them, it's that I tend to get physically ill / dizzy when I play them, especially the fast-past shooty kinds. The mondo medicals/agency kind I am okay with, since they're slow enough that they don't bring on motion sickness so easily.

I also wouldn't say that the majority of games are FPS's -- that's kind of obviously not true. Just look at any list of games released in 2008 or 2009 and you'll see that only a small fraction of them are FPS games. Not even if you just count PC releases are most new games FPS's.

This is true.  I guess I'm thinking of back when 3D graphics in games was new, almost anything in the first person was some kind of military or sci-fi shooter, with the exception of a few RPGs and games like Myst.  Now you have plenty of games that you play in the first person with a weapon in view that aren't necessarily shooters in the traditional sense.  Examples would be Fallout 3, Mirror's Edge, and Oblivion.  Yes, Left  4 Dead is a shooter, but you dont really play it the same way you play Halo or Call of Duty even in the co-op modes for those games.

Oh and I'm not trying to bash you Paul, you obviously have your reasons for not playing the majority of first person games.  Just speaking in general since it's not the first time people put down games for these reasons.

Well, I don't like other elements of them either, such as that they tend to be gory. I don't like gory games, I even avoid horror movies due to the gore. Fallout 3 in particular was only barely playable for me for that reason: I kept at it because I liked the story and the exploration, but I constantly was disturbed by all the exploding heads and severed limbs flying around.
