Hopefully, I'll get to play for more than an hour....

I'm not a big fan of FPS games, but if anyone is unsure I heartily recommend it. The whole teamwork angle is a blast.

I've played the "demo" aka "Free Week" before its release and a few hours of this free day, and I've got to say I still don't like Left 4 Dead that much. It's a great and very well done game with a kind of polish you don't often see in big games, but it just isn't very fun for me. I guess my problem is that the gameplay is mainly very basic. They did a great job of making it very varied, for example through the so-called "AI director", but I still think that it doesn't really offer enough possibilities for the gameplay, for me anyway.
I guess I would really enjoy this a lot playing it with 3 friends next to me. But that happens very rarely, and for that alone I wouldn't want to buy it.

Well, I don't like other elements of them either, such as that they tend to be gory. I don't like gory games, I even avoid horror movies due to the gore. Fallout 3 in particular was only barely playable for me for that reason: I kept at it because I liked the story and the exploration, but I constantly was disturbed by all the exploding heads and severed limbs flying around.
Of course it isn't your point, but if it's still an issue for you, there are mods which can either increase, decrease and even totally disable most of the gore.
Might I ask why exactly the gore is a problem for you? I hope you don't take this as offensive, I'm really just interested Smiley

I hate FPSes.  I didn't care much for HL2.

But I love L4D (and TF2, for that matter).

I'm not sure how to answer, it's just something I find disgusting. It's kind of like asking: may I ask why you don't like looking at feces and vomit, and why you would not play a game where those are the main characters and enemies? It's just something instinctual, disgust is not really under voluntary control.

yeah, but i'm not saying everyone finds the same things disgusting, just that most people find *something* disgusting, and it's kind of an irrational reaction. i know a girl for instance who finds mushrooms disgusting, and feels nauseous whenever she sees them.

I'm actually not a fan of gore at all either.  L4D may be quite a gory game, but I still find it all tastefully done.

It's half a parody of terrible zombie B-movies, but at the same time half serious.  It's actually hard to describe and I wish you would give it a shot.

On a semi-related note: I also love TF2's gore, because I've always found it to be satirical of other FPSes.  Maybe that wasn't their intent at all, but the cartoony art style mixed with the ridiculously over-the-top deaths (once, I scored a headshot with the sniper rifle and the target's entire body exploded :D ) is a hilarious mix.

I feel disgusted or sick when the violence isn't tasteful or humorous though - like in Saw or Hostel or even GTA (am I the only one who never kills the hookers?  I just can't bring myself to do it Sad in fact I go out of my way to avoid/save innocent bystanders when I play)

I even drive by the traffic laws. I must be the only person who thinks a signaling system is necessary in GTA because dammit I just feel guilty taking those turns.

Gunlimb's gore was fine, although I don't particularly like most gore.

I must admit i have some kind of gore fetish of sort. I felt disgusted with stuff like Hostel, yet i forced myself to watch it. Its the same with many otehr things. In fact, I got dissapointed by the fact that manhunt didnt really disgust me, as despite being gory, it wasn't graphically accurate.

In fact, I find FO3 gore more tasteful than it was for teh other 2 games. It was downight explict tehre.

Heh. I have started several guilds in horrible MMOs called "Gore". And one called "Scream Bloody Gore", but you know. I like gore.

I also wouldn't say that the majority of games are FPS's -- that's kind of obviously not true. Just look at any list of games released in 2008 or 2009 and you'll see that only a small fraction of them are FPS games. Not even if you just count PC releases are most new games FPS's.

paul, if you're going to try any FPS it should be thief: the dark project.  i don't know if you have or not.  running it on current computers is an absolute bitch but well worth it.  just saying...

and yeah, L4D co-op flows nice.

Me too. I don't like going on pedestrian rampages in GTA.

I do love over the top stupid gore, and the more of that the better. In fact, I don't think there's ever been a game made that takes the gore to a level that I'd even consider half extreme. I'm absolutely fine with gore, it's just the sort of gruesome violence that I don't like. Exploding people into definable giblets (there goes an eye!  Evil), spraying permanent blood across the floor, walls and ceiling with a semiautomatic rocketlauncher pistol is perfect. Torturing a witness for information by cutting his toes off slowly with a knife is not.

Hahaha, I was quite surprised when I first saw someone die in TF2. I was not expecting them to burst into pieces. The best part is when it takes a snapshot and merrily details which parts of you landed where [Here's your leg!] [Your spleen!]  :D

:D me too, but with New Zealand traffic laws. Which means I generally do a fair bit of damage...

Paul, many FPS games allow you to toggle the gore in the options. This is probably because they have to remove it for Germany anyway and heck, why not just make it an option, but it's there in most cases. Next time I load up L4D I'll tell you if it's toggleable.

I guess the main appeal of Left 4 Dead is the incredible teamwork involved (at least on expert mode), not the zombie killing, or at least in the case of most people. Ditto with TF2, it's a game about acting as a team, not a game about racking up kills.

I hated gore as a kid, but the parents' worst nightmares came true - games desensitised me to it. Now I just can't stand "gore"/blood in a medical context, which is why although I'll happily blow people's heads off in Fallout 3, you'll never catch me playing Trauma Center.

 Shocked

There's more? More like me? Others who play GTA and drive politely, don't kill random folks? This is amazing! We should start a club or something!

Also, Rinku, if FPS games make you dizzy AND you dislike gore, avoid L4D like the plague. Has both in spades. I actually have a friend who can't play ANY fps games as they make him physically ill within about half an hour. It must suck.

Gore, I don't mind it. Most of the time. That's cartoon or medical. I don't go out of my way for it, either - for example, I loathe the very concept of the recent "Torture Porn" Horror Genre. But, vidjagames... still silly enough for me to be happy.
