I think the mode of the server should dictate permadeath. In a SMP server you would want permadeath so that when shit goes down and a megabeast eats half your castle people aren't respawning, whereas in a more creative mood server the current infinite respawn of the current version would fit fine. I don't think respawning really fits the feel of fort vs world mode, is all.
God it's late I'm rambling. Good to hear you're thinking about it, Notch.

It occurs to me that there's no trademark notice or privacy policy on your website. Do the lawyers not suggest that kind of stuff in your country? Given all of the user contributed stuff and the amount of users you have it seems like a time bomb not to have one.
Minecraft is not a registered trademark, so there's not trademark notice. There is an explicit mention of copyright, though. I should put up a privacy policy! Not out of fear of getting into legal trouble, but to inform people what I do with their information. (I don't share it, and passwords are stored as well salted hashes)

That's a good idea! I think it'd be smart to worry about legal trouble though, it tends to come hand and hand with success. Especially if you're planning on starting a new business, nothing beats a good lawyer.
PS: Lawl you edited out "Dear Notch" from the quote you must really not like that deal.

Yeah, you're probably right. I'm almost certainly going to hire a business person soon, and I'll ask him/her to help me sort that bit out.
And I don't even remember editing that part out! :-O

Just stumbled on this- it's supposed to be a list of upcoming features Notch has announced at Minecraftcon. I don't know how reliable it is (Notch will be able to confirm I guess :D ) but if it is true, it is going to be awesome. Can't wait to see sea monsters and whales from my underwater glass city Also, congrats on the 100k, Notch! PS: This is crack.

I think that you should be able to mine clouds. With some special tool of course.

I would be neat to have the flowers used as a way to dye cloth blocks, or some sort of alchemy would be cool too.

what about bubbling pots? they could be a new way to make soup or even bigger batches of soup, or stew even.

I finally dug deep enough to find gold and before i could get out I fell into lava and lost everything. I've been running with a permadeath kinda thing where I delete saves once I die. Anyway I wanted to say how creepy the underground noises are, damn the first time I heard them I ran out of the cave and sealed it with 3 layers of rock. The I went back later. Also fighting people in the underground is annoying.

Gold is worthless at the moment, so don't feel too bad.

I don't like the idea of having to sit by and do nothing on a server when I die, but I don't want to just respawn in a set point. When you die, you should respawn around 400 blocks away from at least two players (so you're not completely out of the multiplayer action) and no closer than 200 from any player. (so you don't spawn in the middle of a town or something, you'll have to make your way to it.) And then it'd probably also be good to prevent the player from spawning too close to player-made blocks like planks and cobblestone, so you don't spawn in the middle of someone's fort while they're away.

What about having glass or something that has reflections also reflect the ghost for people that cant normally see them.
that or a respawning ritual that mainly speeds things up.
or a temporary slowness or SOME sort of temp penalty

One thing that I like about Minecraft is that it balances creative gameplay with destructive gameplay. I think that craftable instruments would be a very cool way to contribute to the creative aspect.
For instance: (A is air, W is wood, S is string) AWS WWS AWS
or something to that effect would make a three stringed guitar/lute thing. You could control the frets with the letter keys, so QWERTY would control the top string and ASDF the middle string etc, and strum with space, and maybe use the far end of the letter keys to just pick one string.
Playing a soulful tune atop a high tower of the castle you built yourself would be awesome.

I second, third, fourth, and fifth Fishy's suggestion. Being able to also write sheet music on paper and play it from it automatically would be sweet, especially in multiplayer. (Still Alive tune for sale! Get 'em while they're hot!)
