Nether chef is an RPG Platformer where you cook for gods. You will summon, steal, and cook as you make preparations for The Coming of the White Tiger.[/size]

Next milestone: Demo build, June 2018 February 2019

I am currently developing this on my own in Unity, learning as much as I can as I go. The main inspiration for the game comes from Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away, as well as the little things I love about my home city Kuching. The initial inspiration for this game came a DoubleFine Amnesia Fortnight Prototype called “The Gods Must Be Hungry”, which you absolutely have to see! Please follow me on Twitter because I post updates there more frequently! Thank you!

Thank you for reading!

Thank you Ninety Smiley

I hope the gods like brocoli.

Now that it's posted, it looks a bit dark.

Realised that the first broccoli was too small so ended up animating broccoli the whole day...

At least they're a family now.

Faking lights with ridiculously tall textures.  WTF

On deciding how much fall-off to apply on the light shafts, I use Solid Color Alpha / 3 * 2
Which gives me:

255 / 3 * 2
170 / 3 * 2
113 / 3 * 2
76 / 3 * 2
50 / 3 * 2
34 / 3 * 2
22 / 3 * 2

I stop at around 20 alpha since that's when you can't tell the difference (at least I can't).

So right after I made that previous post, I came up with a simple solution for the light that doesn't involve gigantic textures (5120px tall). I knew I could scale these fake lights horizontally but not vertically since that would deform the gradient, so what I did was:

1) Export a light tint (22 alpha). This can be scaled both vertically and horizontally.

2) Export a build up image (all alpha values -22). This can only be scaled horizontally.

3) Lay one over the other.

Result:

Et voilà! Guiltless vertical scaling! That glow you see is a Unity point light but I'm gonna have to put in some kind of light sprite in the future.

Nice simple fix. Definitely better than shipping a 5120px texture that's just a single solid color.

That family of broccoli people looks pretty nice. But I'm concerned we might have to murder them...

Haha, I'm glad you like them! The story of the game is lacking momentum at the moment, so I'm making more of these little buggers to build the world and see where things go from there!

Working on this and that. Having a hard time with Unity's animations so more world building before I jump back on that.

Anyway, here's a little house with a lonely piece of charcoal:

Still figuring the colours out. All the art is being done in Pyxel Edit, and I'm not sure when to change colour Lightness or Shading.  Huh?
