Been listening to some hip-hop albums recently. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Solid fucking album. and in particular are my favourite tracks. Nicki Minaj's verse in Monster is just so awesome and probably the best feature of the album. Childish Gambino - Camp. Just started listening to his stuff and really enjoying it. Atmospheric hip-hop is totally my thing and I wish there was more of it. I like how the subtext of the album is pretty obvious and easy to pick up on, but never feels cheesy or hamfisted. Favourite tracks are Bonfire and Heartbeat, obviously. Gorillaz - Plastic Beach. At first I hated the album. Compared to Demon days it was just so different and unfamiliar. Then I began to tolerate it, then I started to love it. It's not a sentiment a lot of people will agree with but I think Plastic Beach is a far greater album than Demon Days. There's such a unique feel and thematic ambiance to the whole album like I've never felt before. I'm not sure if it was the intent, but the album made me think about people with broken lives, with nothing left, and where people turn when everything falls apart. The music videos and artwork accompanying the album help paint a vivid picture of all sorts of people seeking refuge, scattered and confused trying to find some kind of escapism. The plastic beach is this idealistic fantasy of safety and comfort that everyone's striving for. I'm having a hard time imagining what I;m imagining when listening to the album, but there's definitely something unique about the feel of it. Favourite tracks include Empire Ants, Broken, Rhinestone Eyes and Plastic Beach.

it sounds like unreleased material from the 90s tbh. i mean if what he says about his archives is even remotely true, he could probably release 10 more albums without ever producing a new track again.
i'm always conflicted on IDM/warp records type stuff. on the one hand i still like it well enough when i hear it, but on the other hand the whole sound and aesthetic feels so dated to me, esp now that IDM type sounds have been pretty much subsumed into mainstream dance music.

true, but either way, it all sounds really good (jungle like CIRCLONT6A is something i've not heard in a while and it's some fucking great stuff), and it's far more cohesive than drukqs is; i've spun it three times already and i think i like it almost as much as richard d james album
but then i'm an aphex apologist possibly to a fault
i get that the warp vibe has worn much of its welcome out but some things never get old; boards of canada's debut still crackles like magic in 2014. and at least a few of the syro tracks are (appear to be?) completely modern; the title track is aphex doing funk shit, of all things, and it's pretty dazzling. kinda reminds me of kid chameleon. and circlont14 has that bit at 3:15 that sounds more like something born gold would do than an aphex track
good music is still good music, even if it's crazy well trodden
anyway, it's not like warp solely does 90s ambient techno and idm shit.

i should make it clear that i'm not dissing aphex and i think his best stuff (RDJ album, ambient works 1) has actually aged extremely well thanks to his obvious talent as a composer. BoC has aged well too and some of autechre's stuff. i guess i'm just not feeling the new aphex?
my post was mainly just the musings of a former "fan" of IDM who has grown a little tired of that whole "scene" and sound.

nah, it didn't come across as a put-down, and i hope i wasn't too staunchly defensive. i really dug the new album, but to each his own, obvs!

Mister Silbereisen listening to King Buzzo? it's no secret that most people in the schlager business do not like their own music.
