maybe because trane died young and miles was around for like a million years?? tbh i mainly like his fusion stuff. on the corner is a mindblowing album. but tbh im really not interested in starting some kind of miles vs trane argument here.
Don't get me wrong it's just that I have ended up listening to fusion more. I don't dislike Coltrane in any way. Yes, Sun Ra is fucking great too however I have not listened to much of his stuff yet. Sun Ra has quite the discography.

Not everything is worth listening to though unless you're a Ra diehard.

Subgenres are like always very unclear. Listen to Mogwai, to me they have got the typical post-rock sound down perfectly.

I think that the genre is quite recognizable and established. All "post" genres are vaguely defined. Basically Mogwai is generally categorized as "post-rock" (except for maybe their latest LP). All genres are bogus. Hip-hop doesn't exist.

ok the gist was that post rock is an umbrella term for a lot of very different shit and doesn't really mean or represent anything. also most of the bands called post rock reject the term. it started as a music journo buzzword in the 90s and now people on the internet seem to mistake it for a real genre for some reason. anyway give slint a try. they're the originators of the sound i think you're looking for and spiderland is a masterpiece.
