oh rip i was looking forward to reading it
ok the gist was that post rock is an umbrella term for a lot of very different shit and doesn't really mean or represent anything. also most of the bands called post rock reject the term. it started as a music journo buzzword in the 90s and now people on the internet seem to mistake it for a real genre for some reason.

anyway give slint a try. they're the originators of the sound i think you're looking for and spiderland is a masterpiece.
ohhhhh, alright then

oh and i gave mogwai and this will destroy you a listen, not entirely sure how i feel about them though. they're kind of sitting in this awkward spot where i can tell i'd probably like them given a few more listens but nothing has really clicked with me yet. checking out slint now

i thought spiderland was boring the first couple times i heard it. definitely took a few listens to really sink in. it's one of those albums where everything is just perfect but it isn't immediately obvious.

Which band took the longest to grow on you? I can't name anything top of my head but it's more like I get a sudden epiphany about a band I have neglected. It's mostly about being in the right state of mind and it is mostly the singing that puts me off at first (if there are vocals).

Yeah I've had those "epiphany" moments as well, but occasionally I hear some music that interests me but that I don't think I'm fully grasping yet. That's when I'll usually put a bit of "work" into trying to appreciate that music and trying to see what it's all about. Happens more with genres or subgenres than with individual artists / bands / whatever tho.

Merzbow and noise music in general took me a long time to get into but it was mostly just about getting used to the volume.

King Crimson and Godspeed You Black Emperor (speaking of "post rock" lol) also took a long time to "click" for some reason. OTOH, I loved "Trout Mask Replica" by Captain Beefheart pretty much from the get go, which is kind of infamous for being supposedly "inaccessible" so idk.

I'd have to say Unwound. friend burnt me new plastic ideas and leaves turn inside you. I really didn't like them at first, listened to it a few times and put them away for awhile. a few years later I thought I'd give them another shot and really liked what I heard. downloaded some more of their stuff and really liked it too. favorite album is definitely repetition. nowadays I consider them one of my favorite bands.
