@lurk

but i was also uncertain about the first part as well -- so technically it should have been 'i think it doesn't matter cause i think people are very bad at figuring out...' -- in other words it's possible that the second part is correct but that the first part is not correct, or vice versa: there's no necessary correlation between the two parts. it's possible that people are bad at guessing their intentions but that intention does matter: so i meant to express uncertainty to the whole idea, so i put the 'i think' part first to save time

Bennett: I would like to see link to that evidence, then, to judge for myself. I don't subscribe to that though; I create something with an intention, oftentimes a very primal one; entertaining myself, recreating an impression I had earlier in life, etc. If I look back upon my work, I can find other meanings, but these would only be coincidental, since my original intent would have been very simple.

Sometimes, it's better to take the proper time to communicate and avoid misunderstanding, that can lead to improper conversations. Smiley.

@lurk - of course, and i apologize for not being clear the first time, but i am unsure that using 'i think' twice would have been the best idea, it'd have made it more clunky even if more technically accurate, and sometimes being too precise itself gets in the way of communication, so it's a trade-off

I don't subscribe to that though; I create something with an intention, oftentimes a very primal one;

Yeah,  the evidence doesn't show that we don't have intentions, just that we're not good at judging what they are, especially after the event.

As far as a link goes, I think the famous paper is Nisbett and Wilson, "Telling More than We May Know." There's a PDF here. Essentially they review evidence which shows that if you ask me why I did some action X, I won't engage in any kind of truly introspective process where I access my own memories and intentions. Instead, I'll apply the same kind of behavioural model that I would apply when I was trying to guess why another person did X.

If you want newer stuff, search for papers which cite that one.

I'd like to jump in on Paul's defence to say that people sometimes actually double-think. I did it before and it was really weird and realizing it had happened was shocking and interesting. I also suggested on page 4 that sigvatr may have been double-thinking, but failed at doing it properly.

I bet his subconscious is double-thinking but doing it wrong...

So Paul's theory isn't completely impossible, it just seems a little unlikely.

He's everything I hate about CliffyB without the Unreal and Jazz jackrabbit aspects I like!
Also, my feelings exactly. About CliffyB, that is.

The guy who made Jazz Jackrabbit 1 & 2 then abandoned the series and won't mention it any more and acts like he's really awesome and cool and orgasm-incarnate because he also designed Gears of War.

ah, i played the demo of the jazz jackrabbit games, they were fun. why won't he mention it anymore? does he feel bad for having made them or something?

and yes, internal thoughts are a jumble of contradictions, it's a bit too much to expect that what we write has to be self-consistent. multiple personality disorder is a particularly extreme form of that, but everyone has a lesser form of that to an extent; the brain isn't a single entity, it has parts, and those parts can think differently from one another

He did much of the level design for the various Unreal games, made Jazz Jackrabbit, which was a stellar shareware game, and I think he was the producer for both Gears of War.  Professionaly very awesome.

He just tends to act like a hipster douche in interviews and such and is a bit egotistical.  I doubt he's really a genuinely dislikeable person, but he comes off that way.

EDIT: Mostly he and a few other guys at Epic go back in forth on bashing PC games or console games, whatever will make people pay attention to them.  It's horrible to see the flip-flop statements.

thanks, will look for some interviews of him -- it's always sad to see someone go from indie/shareware to the mainstream industry though

CliffyB, the first I heard of him, was a well-respected level designer making free deathmatch maps for the original Unreal Tournament when Epic Megagames offered him a job.
