I've just played it for a while myself. It's not bad, but it's absolutely nothing special at all. Surely you could say games don't have to be special, but a generic game like Neotokyo just won't hold my attention for long, because I've played enough games totally like it already.
But, I think what Neotokyo does it does rather well. Gameplay is simple but solid, invisibility as a little touch seemed to work well, too. The classes and weapons seemed to be balanced okay, graphics are good, although not as good as I expected, and sound is appropriate. The only thing that really shines is the music, and I find it very strange that it's not given the proper attention in the game. It isn't even worked into the game at all, you actually have to run it seperately via Winamp or another player. That's okay, but I guess many players will not know about it at all, even though it really is what mainly defines the atmosphere in my opinion.

I think there's a great example of why Neotokyo is just a rather generic competitive shooter that's likely not going to be played for long outside of the fan community, and why a game like Dystopia is actually still interesting for the "public" players:
When you pick up the Ghost in Neotokyo you are able to see every enemy and their distance to you in the HUD, but only you can see that. This way, using the compass in the HUD, a very communicative player can tell his teammates pretty exactly where the enemies are and make a great difference in the team's success. Though, if that player doesn't use ingame voice, nobody will really benefit from the function at all.
In Dystopia, there is the similar "TAC scan", which shortly marks the enemy positions on the radar and in the HUD. But, in contrast to Neotokyo, that is actually shown to each of your teammembers. It's less powerful, but at least it will always work well on public servers.
But maybe public matches are merely an afterthought in Neotokyo and it's all about the clan matches or so, in which I guess it really works the best by far. At least that would explain why a silly mistake like the illegable weapon statistics could have made it into the release.

I think I will play Neotokyo for a few more days until I won't care about it anymore. The great music will likely stay in my Winamp playlist for a while and will find its way onto my MP3 player. Apart from that, a mod that will not be remembered, I guess.

And that's exactly what I'm doing.
I'm showing up its major flaw by it: Unoriginal.
No game is original.

link another free mod that has a ghost in the shell inspired setting Wink
Dystopia was nice but it's way uglier than NT imo, first it was too arcadey, i don't like shooters with bunny hopping and such masked as realistic. If i want that type of fun, i play Quake 3, where at least i can also rocketjump.

NT isn't tactical like America's Army or True Combat: Elite but it still does a good job, almost at counterstrike levels.

So link another mod that is: a tactical shooter in a cyberpunk setting and then you can say it's not original.

So by your argument, Doom 3 has an original setting in that it pits a disgruntled Space Marine on Mars instead of Earth? Makes sense. Not. Or how about Halo is the most creative game ever  Coffee. I'm talking about gameplay and the game itself and how obvious it is where it took all of its influences from. But in this case it's not just inspiration, it's a simple copy of ideas. Usually folks provide a new twist on old ideas and thus make their own niche. Not so much in this mod.

But here, your wish is granted:

____

So if you want original mods:
Try DIPRIP, vehicular combat.
Try Sourceforts, create your own bases for your CTF Games.
Try Garrymod, uber flexible "create all" mod.
Try Pirates versus Vikings, well toned meleecombat mod.

Further Highquality Mods that take inspiration but provide new twists:
Try Insurgency, for high quality realistic gameplay.
Try Empires, bringing back the old Natural Selection feel with new toys.
Try Eternal Silence, besiege spaceships with Fighters, then take it down from the inside.

I'd mention Dystopia for its unique two world gameplay but most gave up on that mod far back in the Betas without trying the new Version 1.2.

All those mods are doing something Neotokyo doesn't. They come with new experiences, new gameplay mechanics or simply modify existing ideas until they become unique and interesting again. Neotokyo is just... well it's Counter-Strike. In itself that might not be a bad game and might interest some people (as we all know, Innovation is highly undesired in First Person Shooters).

Neotokyo has one important innovation that people are overlooking.  I predict games are going to rip it off for decades to come:

Now the Flag you have to Capture has pointy nipples.  Your character's arms tweak them automatically.  Did Team Fortress 2's Flag (intel) have pointy nipples that the scout could tweak twice as fast?  Did Zoid's CTF Flag have blocky nipples attached to it?  No on both counts.  Well, maybe on the second, I forget.

Counterstrike where cloaking plays an important role, explosive grenades are waaay deadly and people can do awesome jumps.

Nice try, but Fat Princess and Super Cock Blockers both feature flags with tweakable nipples! Guess there's nothing original in Neotokyo after all.

Are the nipples tweakable... in 3d?  I rest my case.
