Hm... looks cool, but I wonder why American movie trailers always have to focus on action. The international ones have a much more light-hearted pace, whereas this one gives the impression that Ponyo is somehow saving the world. Here's the plot synopsis from the wiki:"The plot centers on a baby fish in the sea named Ponyo who wants to become a human girl. In pursuing her goal, she befriends a five-year-old human boy, Sōsuke." Hm. That being said, I'll assume it's just advertising. Here's to another Miyazaki movie!

I'm fairly sure the guy who made the first Ghibli films retired already. This is his son, I think. This one made Howl's, I believe.
I think.
I believe.
Maybe.

His son made Tales From Earthsea, which I guess didn't do so well, and brought Miyazaki out of retirement or something.

Yeah from what I gather his son's work isn't so hot. But Howl's Moving Castle was directed by the man himself.
Considering Miyazaki was supposed to have retired before making Princess Mononoke, any more films we get from him at this point are a bonus that we should be very thankful for.

I watched this a year ago (not bragging). The animation is extremely gorgeous and entirely hand-drawn but the story is rather weak. I watched a "making of" documentary on Japanese TV and Miyazaki said he wanted to avoid the typical story structure and make something entirely new. To me, it didn't work out too well because I felt cheated by the story (a lot of things that happen are only indirectly presented). The DVD is out here though, I think I'm going to buy it and have a second look.

It took so long to get over here because they had to make an English dub. Most Americans don't like reading subtitles, and doubly (triply?) so for a children's animated film.

Heh, I found the right boards. I just posted my introduction in the obligatory info thread, then saw this one.
Hi there, I'm new and a huge Miyazaki fan. I can't wait for this movie to come out.
Cheers,
-Matt

We've established that: It took so long to get over here because they had to make an English dub.

You know, I usually love Miyazaki's films, but Howl's Moving Castle was just brutal. I've seen it twice now, because after watching it the first time I actually didn't believe it could have been as bad as I remembered it being. The second time I watched it, I was on e, loved everything and everyone in the world, and still thought it was a terrible movie.
It was so bad, I was actually pretty down after watching it, but then I went for a walk and touched some trees for a while, and that was pretty awesome.
Lessons learned: Howl's Moving Castle was a terrible movie, and winners may occasionally use drugs, but not if they plan to walk up any steep hills afterwards.

I've seen it some time ago and I liked it. It is the most kiddy and harmless movie Hayao Miyazaki ever made tho, which might make it a bit too kiddy for some.

Fuck, ptoing, your avatar is creepy as hell. Especially when it's known what's being spewed out.
Anyway, I love kiddie movies and I love subtitles. Gonna have to find a torrent of ascertain this or something.
