Bookmarking this thread.

Not a lot of titles I know, which is all the better :D
Shame most of them seem quite hard to track down, but we can always try!

And as usual, can't think of anything that might fit in here either. Ah well.

Perfect Blue, anybody?  It's a psychological thriller about a retired pop idol questioning her own sanity. It was Satoshi Kon's first major hit, and displays a lot of his trademark characteristics: fairly realistic designs (some of the characters actually look Asian!), an intentional blend of fantasy and reality, hallucinations, etc. It's a bit over-the-top when it comes to sex and violence, but if you can stomach that, you'll like it.

I'd also recommend his Millenium Actress, but it was made in 2001, which is apparently a bad thing.

The Band's Visit - Yeah, it's only a couple of years old, but I think it's worth mentioning.
Being John Malkovich - Bizarre, sad, and funny.

I'll see your Being John Malkovitch, and raise you one Adaptation. I think this movie has one of the best backstories ever. After writing Malkovitch, Charlie Kaufman was asked to adapt The Orchid Thief, a book based based on  one woman's investigation of the 1994 arrest of John Laroche and a group of Seminoles in south Florida for poaching rare orchids in the Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve. Kaufman had some trouble writing the screenplay, so he decides that he'll make a totally different movie:

After completing Being John Malkovitch, Charlie Kaufman (now played by Nick Cage) is approached to adapt the book "The Orchid Thief". He's having some difficulty writing the screenplay, so he decides to make a totally new movie, where Charlie Kaufman is asked to adapt The Orchid Thief, but can't, so he makes a totally different movie...

Bloody brilliant. Does anyone know if Synecdoche, New York is any good?

Adaptation was really really really clever. All my friends hated it though. I didn't, but I have to say that I found Being John Malkovich the better film overall.

Haven't seen Synecdoche yet, and according to IMDB there isn't even a release date in Germany or Austria for it Angry suckers

- Ikiru, mostly great Kurosawa film
- 8 1/2 (Otto e mezzo), the most entertaining great film you may ever see
- Lawrence of Arabia, the second most entertaining great film you may ever see
- Allegro non troppo (I wrote its Wikipedia page linked there), what Fantasia should have been
- Anything by Stanley Kubrick, except maybe Spartacus and Eyes Wide Shut

I think those all follow the rules, and that's exactly my list of favorite films, in no particular order.

It's great. I would call it an impressionistic film if that makes any sense, and it has a lovely ending that will shake you a bit. Epileptic

Manos: The Hands of Fate

YES.

No you are not. I do.

Also I have to say that Fahrenheit is a fucking horrible movie. It changes EVERYTHING compared to the book, and every single change is for the worse.

Adaptation was depressing. A fat sweaty Nic Cage jacking off is not a very good sight.

YES.

No you are not. I do.
Still, it's worth watching, as long as you're watching the MST3K version.

ooooh! ooohh! I forgot something really really brilliant:

Dekalog (Krzysztof Kieslowski) - Stanley Kubrick described it as the only masterwork in his lifetime, how wrong can you go. These are ten episodes originally made for TV and based loosely on the ten commandments; no preaching though, don't worry. This is probably hard to get though Sad

As a substitute, may I recommend other excellent films by Kieslowski, such as the Three Colors trilogy (Blue, White, Red), as well as A Short Film About Killing.
