Paris, Texas (Wim Wenders) - best road movie ever, maybe?

Oldboy (Chan-wook Park) - made after 2000? pah!

Night on Earth (Jim Jarmusch) - all Jarmusch films, really

Suspiria (Dario Argento) - the ultimate in psychedelic 70's horror. Seriously, watch this if you get the chance

Festen (Thomas Vinterberg) - go into this film knowing nothing. It will blow you away

Breaking the Waves (Lars von Trier) - heartbreaking

Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht (Werner Herzog) - Kinski is the man

I'll second Hana-bi and the original Solaris. Those are awesome.

C418 , I never said that Hollywood doesn't produce good films. But everyone has heard of Star Wars and The Godfather and they don't need to be in a movie recommendation thread and most people have seen them many times over, hence the rules.

Sure, Hollywood does release a good movie here and there, but it mostly spews shit. If you draw a baseline, the overall quality of movies is down under. I only watch a Hollywood movie if I get recommendations for it.

Also, what are those rules?

Ivan, we two could be friends. Great recommendations there, I'll check out the ones I don't know.

Here's a few Japanese ones:

1964: Suna no Onna (Woman of the Dunes) by Hiroshi Teshigahara, based on the same-titled book by Kobo Abe.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WODbLjG4kzw

1997: Cure by Kiyoshi Kurosawa.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayyP1ELch0c

1995: Maboroshi no Hikari by Hirokazu Koreeda. Beautiful, beautiful movie. Almost exclusively told via its images. Don't get this as a 700mb rip.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yg19kxH0nco

1953: Tôkyô Monogatari (Tokyo Story) by Yasujiro Ozu
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9YbmF0rics

1969: Môjû (Blind Beast) by Yasuzo Masumura.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AB1T_fnMmwg

2004: Cha no Aji (The Taste of Tea) by Katsuhito Ishii /this is from the 2000s, but absolutely amazing

I bet you are one of those people who can't watch old films because they don't have color lol

Why should we watch all these?
it will make you a better person. I promise!

This thread is a great idea, but maybe you should change the title to make it clearer what your intention is. Right now it seems like you're implying that any movie made in this century, or in Hollywood, is automatically disqualified from being something that you "really need to see". So it's not surprising that some people want to argue with that.

But yeah, it's a good idea. Some that I like are:

Rififi

The Mechanic

Rashomon

Heaven - plus anything else by Tom Tykwer

Suspiria (Dario Argento) - the ultimate in psychedelic 70's horror. Seriously, watch this if you get the chance

If you must see only one from Argento, Profondo rosso IS the ultimate.

Aha, thanks for the recommendation, I haven't seen that one Gentleman

I've seen the second part in his Three Mothers trilogy though, Inferno, and was gravely disappointed. Stay well away. Still wondering how the final one, Terza Madre, might be.

a good film is good regardless of it's age; older != better.

is there anyway that someone could NOT make a torrent of these? if someone could NOT make one, it'd be a lot easier to track down some of the obscure titles (no way are most of these in hmv)

Not most of these are not available on not torrent trackers. To not bundle them as a not torrent would not mean having lots of not diskspace free, and also not a lot of upload not power.

Shawshank Redemption was an excellent movie.

So is The Sting.

The Prestige breaks rule #1, but associating it with other movies that have come out this decade would be a shame to The Prestige.
