Some people need victory to produce though, Im sure there are some entries that wouldn't be here or as good if their wasn't some sort of backslap thumbs up at the end.

I say we experiment and have the next compo voting-free.

Would it be possible to rate games on a 1-10 scale individually rather than just voting for your top three? That way everyone gets feedback, and if everyone is awesome then they know they're awesome even if they only make 10th place.

Seems like a good alternative. I still go for no voting/rating/whatever. For science.

That would work, but only if it is possible to not rate games as well, considering some people may not be able to play certain entries.

I personally don't care about score or rating as I entered this competition mainly to test my framework and my ability to complete a game in a short time (great experience) but I concur it could be a bad experience for other less pragmatic devs. And it seems, but maybe I'm wrong, that the more famous devs get more votes based on popularity alone. So maybe an alternative system could be selected. For example, the idea to rate each game between 1 and 10 seems like a good idea.

Maybe the next competition should expose more than just the top game on the main post? Considering there were 48 entries mentioning only 2 of the games was kind of disappointing. I guess it would have to depend on how many entries there are so it could vary from top 5/top 10/top 20 kind of deal.
I do think the voting needs to stay as a form of motivation to finish the entries. I think there should be a different voting system that doesn't force people to sign up to vote. Obviously you bump into the whole issue of the system being abused, I mean there should be a way to "validate" a vote without having to sign up.

As much as the "cave stroy ripoff lol" meme annoys me, I've been thinking something similar. How about a short (like one week) contest where we all make cave story mods with Sue's Workshop?

I'm willing to try some alternative voting methods. The forum software is a bit limited in that regard, unfortunately. So we can try hand-counting votes next time (although realize that will probably extend the time needed to get results). As you can see, there are a lot of differing opinions on how it should be done. Competitions by nature are going to bring in more quality entries, but they'll also inevitably leave some people disappointed. I'm interested in perhaps also setting up "challenges" that can run with longer (maybe no) deadlines, and no voting. @Gazillion: I actually kept it to the top two on purpose... mostly because all the games are already featured pretty prominently on the lovingly-created VGNG compo page . Also because it's like, no matter if I reveal the top X games, the next guys down are going to be a bit miffed. So I kinda felt like the more miffed entrants there were, the more fair it'd be! Also, I was really tired when I wrote that post. @Benzido/Terry: I actually think that's a pretty awesome idea.

Another thing I've been thinking about is a challenge to create a remake of a game you never played, but which you read a review or an advertisement for.
I've been thinking of remaking the old Spectrum game 'Agent Orange', which is apparently about being an interplanetary farmer who plants seeds from a moving spaceship, in competition with other alien farmers. I read the review in 'Your Sinclair' when I was about 9, but I never played it.
In my head, the gameplay emerges from the organic growth of the plants, kind of like that fungal growth game for the Amiga called 'Wicked', but I kind of suspect I'd be disappointed if I played it now.
Anyway, think about the excitement you get from reading a vague preview for a game, and how that excitement usually disappears once you see the final, hopelessly commercialized and dumbed-down product. That's what the competition would harness.

The Cave Story ripoff/Sue's Workshop mod compo sounds quite awesome. If it's the latter I might even try it out, though the ripoff compo would probably be generally more awesome.

HOLY CRAP NICE AVATAR. Also, I'd totally be up for that compo since I already have an abandoned project :D
