Once the compo starts it would be good for people to post things like "VERY simple way to do procedural content!" just so that people without an expertise (me) can do sum games.
So maybe someone should start a thread on this topic...mmmmhhh....

God, I need to learn java in time for this because I totally love procedural stuff and there is so much I want to do that I doubt something like Game Maker could accomplish.

Yay, I've been looking forward to participating in one of these contests since I saw the results of the last one. And procedural content is my speciality . For those who are nervous about procedural content, I'd recommend finding some websites about roguelike development and poking around to find level generation algorithms. The roguelike genre has had lots of interesting new kinds of levels added since the boxes and lines days. A few things I've learned from my experiences: - everybody can tell when they're playing on fractals - smoothing using cellular automata makes everything better - no really, smoothing can turn random noise into a cave - sideview mountains can be made by changing the slope by a random amount every so often - three dee mountains can be made by spamming the 3d parabola function everywhere then normalizing - when in doubt, resort to postmodernism (aka take a bunch of disparate options and throw them together) I can write up some articles if people are interested. I can help a lot with level generation, but when it comes to graphics I'm going to be resorting to postmodernism, when it comes to music I'm at a loss, and when it comes to gameplay we're all lost.

Ah, Squash Monster from the IVAN forums? Welcome!
The same. Thanks! Hopefully I'll manage to stick around here instead of disappearing all the time like I do at IVAN. Also... for those who use game making programs like Multimedia Fusion... I think you might want to get a copy of Game Maker before this one. I think with sufficient cleverness you could pull off procedural content in it, but I rather doubt it of Multimedia Fusion or Klik and Play.

Oh hey, are the IVAN forums still around? I thought they kind of disappeared along with the game's developers...
Shame, too, because even in its beta forum it was one of my favorite roguelikes.

I don't know if there's too much reason to create a poll. Procedural Generation and Demakes seem like pretty clear winners. I think the first competition (Procedural) is going to start very, very soon...

We should have a summer contest marathon where we have one competition for each month in summer.

But summer is a whole seven months away!

Yeah, but competitions where you make your own game > competitions where you remake old games, in my opinion.
