I don't get if the article was serious, mid-serious or a sort of nonsenseless rant, it was funny to read and well written, but Spelunky is a little pearl and IT is an original game. It looks like an oldskool platform, it plays like your average oldskool cavestoryripoff platform but in it's core, it's a whole different world, the roguelike mechanics elevates Spelunky high above all the others indie pixel art platformers for my tastes.
Also Spelunky graphics does not directly ripoff cave story, when The Undeside, expecially in the first versions, had almost identical tiles, particles and hud, and it still have a lot of graphics that's ripped off almost pixel by pixel just like Blopo with Tumbledrop (see tigsource frontpage Pulse for reference).
Also it was always clear that Spelunky is a Spelunker homage, with awesome original bits like the roguelike structure. If it's a love letter, is clearly a love letter to old platformers and to roguelikes, not to cave story or indie games in general

PROTIP: The Spelunky article came out before the game was released.

I've been trying to crack this Super Joe mystery for some time. Some time indeed. Hints may be gotten from the Insignificant Studios forums, where another friend of Arthur Lee with a mysterious identity resides... http://www.insignificantstudios.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=125The style and brevity of these posts are quite similar to Super Joe of two weeks ago. Also similar is the strong knowledge and interest in the Street Fighter series. Then what of the eloquent verbose absurdist Joe that has popped up recently and in the past? Is this the same Joe, or another Joe under the same account? Regardless of the actual number of Joes, there is likely one ORIGINAL Joe, and that fellow is the only person of real concern. Who has a strong knowledge of both Arthur Lee and Street Fighter? I think this is quite believable. Note also that Duncan's avatar is Johnny Five Aces, while Podunkian said that Johnny was based on Super Joe. Coincidence?

He was going on about Wimbledon and humid weather the other day which made me think he as English. I've grown to like some of his posts, bit wish he would drop the gay jokes.

Uhhh, one of his first posts explicitly stated that he was Podunkian. Just posting to let you all know in case you didn't realize. Also, Duncan is Podunkian too; Duncan is one of the characters in the underside. He sure does have a lot of free time.

Ok, I admit it. I am Podunkian's other alter ego. Thanks for ruining my day. No underside preview 4 for you.

Note also that Duncan's avatar is Johnny Five Aces, while Podunkian said that Johnny was based on Super Joe. Coincidence? i've never said johnny is based on super joe. johnny five aces is actually based off of this drawing: the image was drawn by an anonymous something awful forums user for a game a bunch of something awful forums members were trying to create, called 'the zybourne clock.' it of course, ended in complete failure (and though i won't get into it, i play a pretty funny, and FRANKLY A BIT IRONIC role its story). the johnny that exists in the underside is that same johnny, though his mannerisms, etc. are original as the original team hadn't gotten around to characterizing him besides that single image. in fact, there will be an epic, 100+ page 'johnny's journal' ingame that explains both who johnny is and how he came to be in the world of the underside. cliffnotes version: johnny isn't based on super joe or duncan edit: on a side note, i love the zybourne clock and have tried to make at least four zybourne clock games

i've never said johnny is based on super joe.
Hmm, I could have sworn you said that in the feedback thread for the latest underside preview, but I guess you would know better than me. Also thanks for the little background story on Johnny, it brightens up an otherwise lame thread.
