I remember hearing something about the statistics of rape of men being under-reported - because of societal expectations men are "afraid" of admitting they were taken advantage of. If it happened at a young age, people are probably less likely to admit it. (perhaps because of the shame?) I wish I remember where I heard that...
I can for sure back up what you say. Women are more targeted, but cases have come up where one boy has come forward and all the past victims have come up too afraid to say something.

Sexual abuse is under-reported in general.

It seems silly to post 15 pages after it was first mentioned, but fuck yes to the movie Irreversible (first post after the game info).  That movie is everything I wish this game had been.  It's good enough to bring back up this deep into the thread.

Actually, it's been mentioned several times throughout the thread Smiley.

This game looks great but it's so pixelated on my machine that the characters and text look like indecipherable blobs. I've got directx 9 but maybe my onboard video doesn't have pixelshader 2.0? I read earlier in the thread somebody mentioning their screen was blurry. Would a windowed version fix any of this?

Even if I can't run it properly, I can tell this entry stands out among the crowd. You've got my vote. Gentleman

the abuse in this game is far less than the damsel abuse one could do in spelunky
Emily gets smack twice and raped... and or raped again. Where the damsel gets trap in a dark cavern where the only men around are a Indiana Jones rip off who thinks carries you deeper into the cavern is rescue,( Some times the guy get sick ideas of using you for 'disarming' traps and or sacrifice to please a female god.) and a old paranoid cave dweller\shop owner who thinks of you as his 'property' and sells you off to any one who could shell out high prices for poon. oh and the topless followers and vampires that seem to either die from being under you or knock out.edit: but then there is that shortcut guy who digs a path to the top but then by the time he finally gets paid enough your trap behind lava.

... if what I said had any means it's I need to learn how to add in a cave level in edmund(that huge hole seem a nice place for a warp) and I'm must be playing that game wrong if I'm trying to kill vampires with damsels.
oh and I just redownload to see if any changes where made and dang you fix the wall and the twilight room yet I couldn't even find the secret ending (I don't count getting back to the cab a secret.)

oh and you can drag Emily and the nam-mourner across if your close to the pants border keep hitting the action button and any walking direction you can slide the victim to your dick. other than that not a glitch at all and shouldn't be remove the game quickly lost it's fun this time around  Tired really hope you add that level editor and a guide on how to edit this.

snip

Big Laff I love that Spelunky example. Now I can't look at that perverted shop keeper in the same way ever again  Mock Anger

And oh how I would love a map/scene editor! I doubt he would create one. If it was my game I would be afraid people would make something extremely awful, such as something poking fun at rape (i.e. lolrape mentality that you would probably find on 4chan) or glorifying it for a fetish or something along those lines..man I am such a pessimist.

I'm a bit late into this but I just wanted to chime in my thoughts, as it's been a very interesting read making my way through this thread.

As countless others have said I loved the game's aesthetics, a very bleak but polished style, fantastic.
Gameplay wise I found myself a little frustrated by the nam section, which kinda put me off
trying to find all the endings.  But I acknowledge this is probably largely due to my preference for hassle free gameplay that lets me experience all the content with relatively little effort (what can I say, I'm a busy and lazy guy Tongue ).

I can't say that I have conciously taken anything substantial away from playing the game itself but this consequential thread has been quite enlightening and thought provoking, so for that I have to commend Farmergnome for his time and effort.  Gentleman

I have to agree with some of the other posters that I would like to see a game that attempts to explore the more confusing/blurry lines of rape, where the player takes the role of the victim.  A husband/wife relationship where rape occurs, girls who dress provocatively and the mind sets of certain men towards them etc.  But nevertheless I commend your efforts on tackling the issue.

Also it's really really refreshing that games with this kind of subject matter can be made and discussed in a mature and reasoned manner, without descending into a reactionary farce (i.e. indiegamer), so  Smiley Hand Thumbs Up Left to all who contributed.

I really appreciate Edmund because you don't really know the motives. You know that he is a schizo, probably due to war trauma but you really don't know why he just walks along the road and does the acts and same goes for the Vietnam scene-he kind of just does it. Leaves it to the imagination and makes one wonder, instead of just plainly laying it out there. I love Braid for that very reason. But, that's just me  Tongue

Reading the rest of this thread a bit I should say that I feel Edmund is a very successful game. Sure, it can be argued whether this is an effective way to tackle the subject, but that the game spawned such a discussion over the matter is a success in the sense of it creating an influence on people.

The game reminded me a bit of Jacob's Ladder. Was it one of your influences, Farmergnome?

Well, I don't have much to say, other than "this is a briliantly realized game".
