I replaced the red outline with some spikier terrain and used a different texture for the sand terrain.

Loving these mockups and like the new spikier terrain, works alot better. Not sure about the sand terrain texture though.

I think I finally finished this NES mock, other than HUD details, and maybe a monster sprite or something. The sprites use the OAM-order sprite layering trick. It'd likely be vertical mirrored to allow horizontal scrolling. It would probably use MMC3 scanline interrupts for tile bank switching/scroll fix on the HUD, and could probably have parallax effects.

This isn't something I plan to work on yet, but I had fun doodling stuff using NES specs.

@Rykuth

That guy looks a bit like one of the dudes from Kerbal Space Program.

@Chromanoid I'm definitely going to do my best to make sure it becomes a game. I just suck at music and I'm only ok at programming so I probably can't do it all myself.
I actually originally had a human main character: but I wanted something a little simpler because making all the enemies in that style was getting tedious. In the process of simplifying he kinda changed species Tongue
nice stuff Smiley I actually thought of a human main character (like the cute one you posted) together with these more simple creatures. I agree with you that the style should be similar, but if the player stands out a bit it might increase the feeling of being a visitor to a foreign world in a positive way.

I had a crack at one of these.

Background is lacking, and I really have no idea what to do with the hud, but its 3am now so time for bed now.

This would make an awesome dekstop/wallpaper.

New mockup (previous ones ): bigger resolution 1600*1200.

You and co-op players control the magicians; you use spells and artefacts to beat various foes and escape numerous dungeons, etc.
Yeah, I know the trees are pretty similar to the Zelda Minish cap trees ^^
Future changes: draw a fancier background, re-draw the trunk, design the exits (these arrows are just placeholders)...
And I'll probably start a devlog as soon as I'll be able to design a acceptable animation with Flash!

Amaaazing! How do you imagine this game working? Is it turn based or...? I get sort of a fat wizard vibe from this which I think is def a good thing. Love the textures and I think the trees are just great. Didn't play minish cap though!

Fixed up the background clouds a bit. Used sprite-over-tile layering to create the heart on the HUD.
