Looking at some alternative color schemes with nes color restrictions for new levels. It's hard to find good combinations for certain level themes. Looks really awesome and 'retro?' The background tiles and how i think it's shadow cast by sun in the top left; breaks when they're randomly black in the middle. it's confusing.

Mono, I'd say the bottom one works better if only for the contrast against the lava. You want the player to see that danger right away.
