I am in no way worthy of posting here, and I believe this does not warrant the "Please say this is going to be a game" title, but I'm working on this: I decided by this style, and I'll stick to it. I'd like to add some trees and flying colorful moving butterflies in the background (and even maybe a roaming traveling baloon). Yeah... I am happy, anyway. Even if it goes nowhere.

Looks nice, but the grass is hurting my eyes. If you could make it a darker shade it would look pretty good. :-)

I'm trying to visualize a concept I've been working on, this is kind of rough. The game is rendered at low-res, then scaled up and the sprite colors replaced with higher-res textures. The hero is sky/clouds/stars, the princess is water/ocean, and he tries to help her escape a world inside her mind. Using this tileset and these sprites. Cool idea! I have one thing though... If you're gonna play with different resolutions, which is in itself a thing that's very hard to make good looking, try to keep the degrees of resolution as few as possible. In your screens it seems that there are three different resolutions going on: 1, the background, very low res. 2, the characters' outlines, higher resolution than the bkg but still lower than 3, the water/sky textures, which I suppose will be the same resolution as the screen once the game is played. I'd put 1 and 2 together, and have just two resolutions, pixel art and textures. Also, I'd apply a small degree of texturing to the environments as well, to keep it consistent.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm going to try to redo these shots tonight with more consistent sizes. The base resolution is going to be 426x240, scaled up 3X to fit 720p. After scaling, I'd be applying a pixel shader to the 1280x720 image to replace target colors with (animated) textures.

I started to work on a new game prototype for the last few days. As well as this mockup I have also made most of the animations that are required for the player, including multiple weapons, such as bow, sword&shield, a torch, and the animations for a basic skeleton enemy. As a quick guide to my idea for the game play, think Abes Odyssey and Flashback meets Jet pack (without the jet pack). You can however find more details and art on my blog, in my sig.

Screw it, I just wrote the darn shader and took a capture in-engine: Beyond the shader effect, I have no idea what art direction I'm going for.
