it could have been worse, you could have used Unity5
What's wrong with Unity? Soft that does what they are advertised to do but get bad rep by status hungry when too many shovel ware are made with them or kids, aka they correlate the crap to the software Unity is great if you're skilled enough to make it look like it's not Unity. And if you don't tell anyone you're using Unity.

If you are a REAL DEV you use Unreal Engine .. even though it has more shortcoming that pull you down, but HEY now it's free and has C++ source code available, so you have all the downside of making your engine from scratch and the complexity of fighting an engine with assumption made for you to bump into, BUT you are REAL DEV! (hint I know people who are stuck into platform because unreal don't support other well like unity does).

Another mock-up: Mainly wanted to show the changes in the tiles, heavily inspired by shining force.

frankly without the assets looking amazing by themselves they for some reason make that look like it'd be an incredibly fun game??

A little mockup of a mmo guild simulator i'm thinking of doing. Wow veterans might recognize some. Also my first mockup ever after two weeks of pixel art.

Looks sweet! Reminds me of the new Rayman games. a mockup I've had on my hard drive for a while. Still pretty happy with the trees.

Add particles and make the particles reflect on the walls like the player does right now. Other than that it looks like something I'd play, maybe just make sure to always use the same rez of pixels for everything if you can.

The final game will be rendered 3D not painted but otherwise this captures the vision perfectly.

Your mockups reminded me what makes a good platformer visually - Being able to see everything, not compromising colors and making them darker. Basically, there's a clear separation between the background and the foreground even though everything's really bright in the second mock-up. Really nice.
