i don't know, i like the ori more than the edit, because the green and some super contrast piece hurt my eye.

Hmm... I think the yellow may be blowing out the contrast, this seems more readable to me.

fwiw you might want to push the contrast a little more to help readability, though I do like the dingy feel of the above.
That said:

This kind of scheme gives off more of a "hot damn that place is not hospitable" feel - you'd need to tweak the contrast back into the player though, this blows out his mask and areal detail. Another colour might be needed on the lighter metal with this scheme too (just borrowed from the darker metal probably, to AA with the ground)

I like the foreground more in Geti's edit, but definitely love the original background.

I think this looks great with the subtle colours.
But we are commenting on a still here, yet when things are in motion (be it scrolling along or  some simple animation) they can become a lot more readable (in case you are worried about somethings read-ablility).

They both look good but the yellow one hurts my eyes a bit, guess it just depends how long you plan on having the player stare at this background.

@Gribbins: Awesome, very moody. No idea how it would play though.
And now, a mockup I've spent barely any time on:

Reminds me of Samurai Jack, I imagine this would play somewhat like super brothers: Swords and Sorcery.
