@Psysal: I hadn't heard of that before! Looks fun. They do look a bit similar come to think of it. The similarity is definitely unintentional however. :P

@ninto: Thanks! I'd appreciate a little more in-depth criticism apart from 'its awkward' though, since it's a bit of a broad term. :] PM me if you'd like.

... Loving the aesthetics there JWK5. I really, really want to play a game that takes place in that sort of setting.

Made a scribbly-as-fuck background for a platformer to see how it might look in-game. The image is 648x1024 and has invisible platforms placed over it. If you want to try it out you can get it here (directional keys move and 'S' jumps). Made with GM8.1 (using the Grandma Engine).

Cool, I'd like to see a whole game in this hand-drawn style.

Thanks everyone! Coffee

Yeah, I am working on a 'metroidvania' that will be hand-drawn like that. I am working on the gameplay end of things at the moment but once I got a nice clear vision of that and something playable I will make a devlog for it.

It's not the style overall, I think your mockup has an incredible style. It was more just cool to me that your mockup had the same layout as TAG's very first screen. Anyhow if you haven't played TAG I can't recommend it highly enough, it is really magical and awesome! =)

Please make your mockup into a game, I really like it!

Oooooooohhh! (@JWK5) Kiss

I've been tinkering with this:

(Click to see the full size)

I thought I'd try making something with only 4 colors (that is 4 colors on screen at once, though I might use a different palette for winter eg.). This would be an exploration game where you start by putting together your pioneers party by selecting people with different skills (like carpentry, hunting, medical and so on) and then go on a quest to explore the land. You'd have to fight the wildlife, occasional tribespeople, weather, forge paths trough forests, find food and build shelter and rafts/bridges/whatnot to cross the waters. Your objective would be to surive, discover all of the land and return home with your new knoweldge of the world, otherwise what's the point. Inspired by the real explorers and stories about all that.

Does this look a bit dull/dark with only 4 colors?

@Eigen: I think it looks fine the way it is. Very retro, and detailed, all the same.
