I was skeptical myself.
My first contact was Akira... and I loved it.
I'm not hardcore anime follower, and for that I think I can recommend you (OP) these series/movies:
FLCL (Short, bizarre, fun and awesome)
Ghost in the Shell 1 & 2 (The movies... Bladerunner-ish theme)
Cowboy bebop (not the best script, fun to watch action, the music is FUCKING GREAT)
Howl's Moving Castle (A cute magical story)
Those anime I mentioned (except FLCL, maybe) are not so culturally binded, that's why they're more prone to be accepted by occidental societies.

Maybe it's just me, but all the older anime I've seen have that weird colour palette where everything looks kind of desaturated and off. It kind of makes everything look sort of ugly and depressing. |

I really hate Bleach, Inuyasha and Naruto. They all suck equally.

I sorta like Naruto, mainly because I really like some of the characters. That being said, there are SO many problems with it. |

I'm more of a manga enthusiast, because there is a lot more variety. Anime adaptions of manga usually add/subtract from the story. Also I find that productions values seem to go down after a while.
Though what I am watching/have watched
FLCL
Naruto (stopped watching when the fillers came, still read though not with full attention getting boring)
Dragonball
DBZ (can't wait for the new 200 episode remake coming)
One Piece (don't really like the art/animation so I've dropped it also, reading it since I find stills work better for the art style)
Code Geass (season two sucked so hard, the first season was pretty good though)
Black Lagoon (Love it)

Guilty as charged as a Narutofan...it's simple...dumb...but I still find it satisfying...
But favs of all time: Berserk, Hajime no Ippo, Goldenboy, Ranma 1/2 (first and second seasons only), Record of Lodoss War

Do you mean Dragon Ball Kai? The thing that recently came out in Japan, if so, it's not a remake, just a cleaned up HD version with the filler cut out. If not, I demand to know what you're talking about now!  |

If not, I demand to know what you're talking about now! It's a remake. They're trying to make more like the manga, so it's not just cutting it's also reworking to make episodes shorter. Music has be redone too. |
