I got thinking about what my least favorite game that I ever played was, and decided it was probably Sonic and the Secret Rings.

So, what's your least favorite game? Doesn't matter if it's commerical or indie, old or new.

Speed Punks for the PSX. Someone gave it to me, and I still can't tell why. Terrible game by any standard - like if you created a a bizarre, poorly made clone of Super Mario Kart, added tree houses, and subtracted the enjoyment and interesting graphics.

Least favourite implies I still kinda like it... doesn't it?

If you're talking about games that I hate... then the list is waaaaaay too long to bother listing.

I can think of a few games that are terrible by any sane standards that I still quite enjoy (like too much even.)  Joe Snow comes to mind.

No? I've definitely heard that phrase to describe the worst of something, but maybe that's just an American thing, or regional in some other way.

Anyway, it just so happens that my least favorite game is Sonic and the Black Knight, which is the sequel to Sonic and the Secret Rings, which I never played. I had to review Sonic and the Black Knight for Kidzworld, and it had a completely incoherent story and gameplay, which actually punished you for naturally trying to go fast through a level. I hated it, and being an old Sonic fan only made it hurt that much more.

First four that come to mind:

Bonesaw. It's really frustrating and I would have given up long ago if it weren't for the music. So I keep coming back and playing it, and that little bit of hatred just keeps getting deeper and deeper.

La Mulana. Everyone says it's great, but I can't get through more than a few rooms, and the platforming is terrible. If it weren't for all the hype I probably would have forgotten it by now.

Flashback. See above, but with lower difficulty.

Spore.

It looks like hype is a major factor. Without the hype, I just give up and forget about it. It's not so easy to forget when people keep bringing it up over and over again, though.

Right now I hate Flash games with twitch gameplay that consider you as little more than a lab rat (that is 99% of flash games).Games that I stop playing after 1 hours and I wonder, WTF am I doing trying to beat the next level in that stupid game.

Braid. I just can't stand the game. Why the hell is actually completing the levels and advancing forward completely secondary to collecting and completing jig saw puzzles? The platforming aspect of the game serves as nothing but an excuse to get parts for what really is nothing but a jigsaw app. And then the creator of the game has the nerve to say that he some kind of expert on game design?

The game isn't bad (I think it's decent), but it's nowhere near as revolutionary as people say it is. In fact, I think its overrated and people worship Jonathan Blow a bit too much and give him too much credit. Or maybe he gives himself too much credit, at any rate, it irks either way.

Oh and also the story is completely ridiculous too. It puts most art games on TIGSource's front page to shame. It tries to make strange little metaphors like comparing the manhattan project to an abusive relationship, which makes no sense at all.

Falsion decided Cave Story wouldn't be as controversial. Hooray for ninja edits.

I was just kidding about that. I initially thought, "hey there aren't really any games I hate" so thought it'd be funny to make a cave story rip off joke. Then I remembered that I really disliked Braid, so I deleted that post.

Oh, and this isn't the first time I've said I hated Braid. I'm sure people remember me talking about the exact same thing in a certain front page article. Which was one of the the reasons Edmund (or whoever the guy who made Gish is) made that one video complaining about front page comments (which by the way was unfunny).

do we really need a thread talking about which indie games and mainstream games we hate -- seems pretty negative and likely to lead to people getting upset when they read it and see their indie game mentioned, which may lead to drama and internet fights

but anyway, the main indie games i dislike are games which seemed to be motivated by mean-minded mocking -- good examples are 'progress quest' and 'the linear rpg' which i felt were unfair towards the rpg genre. another example is 'the gutter' and that graveyard demake which seemed to be primarily focused on making fun of tale of tales (even though the games themselves were interesting in their own right, especially the gutter).

as far as mainstream games go, i tend to dislike games that rely too much on "violence porn" (i.e. gratuitous gore just for the sake of it), but i understand that some people aren't disgusted by that and enjoy it, so let them have those games. i also tend to dislike games which use very cheap forms of addiction (like MMORPGs), although there are often interesting parts of those games as well (such as the emergent economies in those games)

even if the video weren't funny, the juxtaposition of these two quotes considering the video's content sure is D:

 Huh?

Uhm...

...the game that I really come closest to "hating" is Gears of War, but only because I find it an immensely mediocre game (way more so than Halo; at least that had a little entertaining gameplay), yet many people treat it as some sort of modern drama worthy of great praise.

Also there's not jump button. You have to wait to a point in the game where you're supposed to jump, and then use the context-based jump system.

Actually I think the game I actually hate is Max Payne. Mainly because I've never seen anyone criticize it, even though it's a horribly flawed game. (I mean come on, why wasn't Keanu Reeves cast as Max in the movie? The actor they chose wasn't nearly wooden enough.)

Oh! And Final Fantasy 7, because everyone who loves it seems to dislike Legend of the Dragoon, which I thought was far superior. And the ATB system is a piece of crap which should be taken out back.

Most of my anger is context-based, not really fault of the games themselves. Eh.

Make sure you keep the discussion civil guys. Nothing bad yet but this kinda discussion can lead to some unwanted bile. Just saying.

I have to agree with Paul on the MMO comment. MMO's usually use a cheap form of addiction that exploit the brain's natural tendency to be addicted to a constant sense of progress and achievement, which these games extend through sometimes hundreds of hours. Many have interesting characteristics, but most are guilty of this issue.

I actually believe this specific aspect of MMO's (the old carrot on a stick) should be fought against, even if just boycotted by players (I don't support banning MMO's, that'd be like those dick politicians). It can lead to a lot of problems, especially from individuals easily addicted to this type of gameplay. We all heard the stories of people whose lives deteriorated over MMO addiction.

Damn I use that word a lot.

If we're going to be ragging on popular indie games, I'm gunna have to put my vote in for Dwarf Fortress. It's a game concept I want to like (I like emergent "situations" to deal with in games) but for the life of me I can't stand trying to learn how to play it. Give me an interface that didn't come from the 80's please, and don't make me watch youtube videos just to "start" knowing how to create a village.

I'll also go with Shade and put a coin in against FF7.. though not for the same reason. I think I might have enjoyed the game sometime, but by the end I just didn't care and wondered why I was playing it. I uninstalled the game right before the final boss. Though I think I have a general disdain for RPGs where I'll play and know "my character could be stronger" and end up following guides on how to build my characters up to be the strongest.
