Thankfully it doesn't look like it has been made too easy. La-Mulana without the devious difficulty and infuriating traps is... not much really.

If I were to make a port/remake like this, I'd deliberately change lots of insignificant stuff just to piss off self-righteous nerds.

Exactly.

I'd remove the obscureness from half the puzzles and watch them cry.  Tears of Joy

New Moozaks Released
The tracks are a lot more hit-or-miss than the original soundtrack was, but there are some fun ones in there.

I am a ridiculous fanboy of La Mulana. Kiss I am in love with the game, but somehow I liked every single change theyve made that I heard about so far! Does that mean I didnt like the original as much as I thought...?

I like all of the new songs! Instead of just giving the originals a new shine or new, less chiptuney instruments they've made them evolve into proper new versions, It feels like a real, evolved remake instead of just a love letter to the original game. It really feels like (well, as far as what ive seen; obviously I didnt play it yet!) what the game would have been if it had been made 8 years later (in the fictionnal world where the original game was an actual MSX game)

One thing that often bugs me in remakes of classic videogame songs, is that the remake sounds superficially like the original but misses the point somehow. For instance, a melody (or part of one) in the original that really stands out and gives it character (often simply a side effect of the limited tracks of the original version) becomes sort of drowned in a sea of instrumentation or otherwise toned down, making the new song feel sort of bland and lack the original's charm. I didnt see that here, theyre all reckognizable and improved. Great job, I say!

This new Muburk music's pretty awesome. In the others, I feel like there is often too much percussion. But it's definitely comparable!

Actually, I'm pretty sure dude-in-a-swimsuit will still be allowed under their current rating.

And honestly, I would love to see people going through the Hell Temple under the vain illusion that they'll get something new, only to get the SAME EXACT THING.

Heck, I'm sort of hoping it just goes back to 8-bit for that part and reuses the exact same art.

It wouldn't Hell Temple without it.

If I were making a move like this? I'd produce the original and remix versions, and release them both. That's the way you stick it to the fans. (Or an option to toggle or randomize them would be more generous.)

Glad to see this happen.  La-Mulana and Cave Story were two of my first indie games.  I hope they do well.

I don't know if we should rejoice just yet, considering the state of the Cave Story port on the Wii. Personally I am a bit wary of how this one will turn out as well... La Mulana is a far better game than Cave Story, but I have no great hope that its WiiWare port will turn out any less broken. Do you?
