Possibly The Chaos EngineThe Chaos Engine was AWESOME I've been slacking for far too long, but I've recently got back to work on my game engine and an Alien Breed tribute is a major priority for me :D

there was also a freeware top down game with similar movement style like in BOH. just forgot the name. (i think it started with T... or B... but im not sure) came across like a dos game where you only saw the stuff that were in your sight. it had some sort of a 3d engine and was mission based.
Could it possibly be Tapan Kaikki 4: Bloodshed? thanks, thats the game.

Hi,
Not sure if it's really what you're looking for, but I was wondering if you might enjoy Shadowgrounds... 3D graphics but top-down viewpoint, and no mouse aiming if I remember correctly. BUT the screen does rotate so if that bugs you maybe not. You might check the demo though.

mouse aiming... Ok i just remembered the name of one of the best topdown shooter ever. Take No Prisoners http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wnFIkjKqmIthis game made me do weird dreams during 1997... there was also another one by Raven, fantasy themed, they used the same engine

Never played Take No Prisoners, but it looks damn fun. :D Edit: Also Assault Trooper might be of interest, though it's from isometric point of view, not top-down.

Maybe Theseus? It might not be quite what you want... It pretty much boils down to you vs. epic wave after wave of monsters, with survival only possible with the continual discovery of larger and more ridiculously devastating weaponry. It's not the best game I've played, but it can be fun for a while. I used a mouse, but I think it supports gamepads.

I don't think Dogs of War have been mentioned yet. I like it because you can play the missions in any order, and you get to buy weapons rather than just picking them up on the playfield. Druid and Ranarama are two Gauntlet clones.

Smash TV? There's an excellent (although politically incorrect) top down shooter.
